MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs kicked off the 2007-08 season with a hard-fought 75-50 exhibition victory over the St. Joseph's Pumas. St. Joe's scored the game's first five points, and there were three ties and three lead changes in the opening frame before a conventional three-point play by Mike Green at the 7:05 mark put the Bulldogs on top to stay, 21-18. Butler's lead stretched to as many as nine points late in the half before a 4-0 run by the Pumas pulled them to within five at 35-30 at halftime. The Bulldogs pulled out to a double figure lead, but the Pumas continued to battle back, pulling to within nine at 54-45 on a three-pointer by Pike High School graduate Devin Thomas with 10:35 left. Butler outscored St. Joe's 21-5 from that point, including the game's final 13 points, to secure at 75-50 victory

PLAYER OF THE GAME: A. J. Graves. The senior guard led all scorers with 19 points to go with five assists and three rebounds.

Green added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists. Freshman Matt Howard had 12 points, four rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Drew Streicher added 10 points and four rebounds. Julian Betko finished with six points and three rebounds, while Willie Veasley also had six points. Pete Campbell had five points, Elliot Engelmann added three points, and Grant Leiendecker finished with two points. SJC was led by Thomas' 12 points.

Butler struggled from the perimeter in the first half, shooting just 3-of-14 (21%) from behind the three-point arc. That was largely offset by an 8-of-12 performance from two-point range. They were getting good looks, they just weren't dropping. The Bulldogs had eight assists on their 11 first-half baskets. The shots started falling in the second half, as Butler shot 52% overall and 55% from three-point range after halftime while limiting the Pumas to just 30% shooting. All players eligible to play saw the floor, the lone exception being transfer Avery Jukes, who must sit out until the end of the first semester to fulfill NCAA transfer residency requirements.

Butler will face Marian College in its final exhibition contest. Game time is Saturday, November 3, at 7:00 p.m. Hope to see you there.
