MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs overcame a 13-point deficit and forced overtime but were unable to overtake the Tennessee Volunteers, dropping a 76-71 decision in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Tennessee jumped out to a 13-2 lead and eventually held a 21-8 advantage at the 11:27 mark of the opening frame. The Bulldogs clawed their way back, pulling within one at 35-34 on a Pete Campbell three-pointer, but Chris Lofton answered with a three of his own to give Tennessee a 38-34 halftime lead. The Vols scored the first six points of the second half to take a 10-point lead at 44-34. The Bulldogs kept their deficit at single-digits from that point forward, eventually forcing the game's first tie at 60-60 with 2:37 to go in regulation. Wayne Chism's basket gave Tennessee two-point lead. Tyler Smith and Mike Green each split a pair of free throws to make it 63-61. Green made a steal then missed a jumper, but Willie Veasley's tip-in tied the game at 63. J. P. Prince was called for traveling with 4 seconds left, but the Bulldogs were unable to capitalize and the game went to overtime.

Lofton and Green traded three-pointers to open the scoring in the extra session. An A. J. Graves basket gave Butler its first and only lead of the game at 68-66 with 1:49 left. Tennessee then took control with a 6-0 run to take a 72-68 lead with 0:26 remaining, and made all four free throws to close the game, earning a 76-71 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Graves. Despite a 6-of-18 shooting night, the senior led all scorers with 21 points along with five steals and three rebounds.

Green had 15 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Campbell added 12 points and five rebounds. Veasley had 11 points and three rebounds. Drew Streicher had four points, five rebounds, and three steals. Matt Howard added four points and five rebounds. Julian Betko had four points and four rebounds. Tennessee was led by Chism's 16 points.

Too many missed opportunities cost the Bulldogs. The play-by-play in the box score lists 10 missed layups for Butler, and the Bulldogs were 18-of-28 from the foul line.

Thanks to A. J., Mike, Julian, Drew, and Pete for giving us so many great memories over their careers. You guys definitely left your mark on the program, and it's been a pleasure to watch. To the returning players, work hard this offseason and prepare for your chance to make an impact next season. Thanks to the players, coaches, and support staff for another incredible season.
