MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders 81-71 to capture the championship of the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, AK. Butler led the entire game as Drew Streicher's three-pointer put the Bulldogs on the board first. The Bulldogs led 10-4 after a Pete Campbell three-pointer at the 13:52 mark. The Red Raiders pulled to within one on three separate occasions, the last of which came at 16-15 with 7:37 remaining in the opening frame, but would get no closer. Butler went on a 15-4 run to take a 31-19 lead at the 3:56 mark. Texas Tech scored 13 of the final 16 points in the half to close to within two, 34-32, at halftime. The Bulldogs began the second half with a 14-4 spurt to take a 48-36 lead with 15:18 remaining. The Red Raiders twice cut their deficit to five, but the Bulldogs pushed back out to a double-digit advantage. Their lead was between eight and 14 points for the final nine minutes of the game as Butler cruised to an 81-71 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mike Green. The tournament MVP had game-highs of 23 points and seven assists to go with three rebounds.

A. J. Graves sank six three-pointers for 18 points along with four assists and three rebounds. Campbell nailed four triples for 12 points. Matt Howard added 11 points. Streicher finished with 10 points and three assists. Julian Betko finished with five points and four rebounds. Willie Veasley added two points. Texas Tech was led by Martin Zeno's 17 points.

Butler's perimeter offense for their three games in Alaska was simply outstanding: a tournament-record 17 three-pointers in the opener, 14 more in the semifinals, and 16 tonight on just 24 attempts (67%). The offensive efficiency was once again impressive, with 18 assists on 28 made baskets against just seven turnovers. It wasn't Butler's best defensive effort, as the Red Raiders shot 60% overall and 50% from behind the arc. With so many made shots, neither team cracked the 20-rebound mark, with Texas Tech holding a slight 18-16 rebounding edge. An impressive three-game stretch, including three wins over BCS conference shools, and another tournament championship.

Butler gets a chance to recover from any potential jet lag with nearly a week off before returning to the Hinkle hardwood against former Bulldog player and head coach Thad Matta and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Game time is Saturday, December 1, at 7:30 pm EST. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
