MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs overcame a cold shooting night to open Horizon League play with a hard-fought 53-46 victory over the Detroit Titans at Calihan Hall. Both teams struggled offensively right from the start, battling to a 7-7 tie at the 12:12 mark of the first half. Butler then went on an 11-2 run to take an 18-9 lead, but Detroit answered with a 8-0 spurt to pull back within 1. A Mike Green layup with under a minute to go gave the Bulldogs a 20-17 lead at the half. Detroit spent a good portion of the first 10 minutes of the second half with the lead, but never by more than three. The two teams then exchanged leads for the next seven minutes, eventually battling to the game's sixth and final tie at 42-42 with 2:56 left. Julian Betko's three-pointer gave the Bulldogs the lead for good, and a Matt Howard tip-in pushed Butler out to a 47-42 lead with 1:54 to go. After a pair of Jon Goode free throws, Howard and Eulis Stephens exchanged layups to make it 49-46. Green then sealed the game with a pair of free throws, a steal, and a layup to give the Bulldogs a 53-46 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Howard. Once again, when the perimeter shots weren't falling, Howard rescued the Butler offense. He finished with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds. Matt also recorded three blocked shots.

No other Bulldogs reached double figures. Green was closest with nine points along with six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. A. J. Graves had eight points and four rebounds. Betko also finished with eight points. Drew Streicher finished with six points, while Willie Veasley added two points. Detroit was led by Goode's game-high 21 points.

Butler was never able to find its perimeter shot, finishing just 3-of-19 (16%) from three-point range, although they attempted just six triples in the second half. Detroit's defense was tenacious all night, holding the Bulldogs to just under 40% shooting for the game. One key stat for the Bulldogs was their rebounding, particularly on offense. Butler outrebounded Detroit 30-21, including 16 offensive boards leading to a 17-2 advantage in second chance points. Calihan is never an easy place to get a win--tonight's win and last season's victory are the first consecutive Butler wins at Detroit since 1991-92--and tonight was no different. But it still goes in the books as a win, regardless of the shooting percentage.

Butler next travels to Wright State for a showdown with the Raiders. Game time is Saturday, December 8, at 7:00 p.m. EST.
