MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs shot their highest field goal percentage since the Great Alaskan Shootout championship game en route to defeating the UIC Flames 73-57 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler never trailed, taking the lead for good on an A. J. Graves basket to make it 7-5. That sparked a 12-0 run, giving the Bulldogs a 17-5 advantage at the 13:46 mark. UIC got within seven twice, then Butler pushed its lead to as many as 15 at 31-16. A 14-6 UIC spurt got the Flames within seven before back-to-back three-pointers from Julian Betko gave the Bulldogs a 43-30 halftime lead. UIC closed to within eight at 52-44 with 12:13 to go, but the Bulldogs rolled off nine unanswered points to make it 61-44. A 13-4 run by the Flames again cut their deficit to eight, but they could get no closer. Butler scored the game's final eight points to earn a 73-57 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mike Green. Mike has been solid of late and I felt it was time to give him some well-deserved recognition. He finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, sis assists and just one turnover in 31 minutes. He also had a pair of steals.

Matt Howard led all scorers with 20 points to go with four rebounds. A. J. Graves added 16 points and five rebounds. Betko had 11 points, all in the first half. Willie Veasley added four points and three rebounds. Pete Campbell had three points. Drew Streicher finished with two points and three rebounds, while Avery Jukes added two points. UIC was led by Josh Mayo's 19 points.

Butler shot a blistering 68% in the first half, including 58% from three-point range. They cooled off to 39% and 15%, respectively, in the second half, but the defense held UIC to lower percentages in the second half as well. Butler outrebounded UIC 28-14. The ball movement on offense was as good as it's been in quite some time.

Butler has a nine-day break before embarking upon a very tough three-game road trip. Up first is a trip to Valparaiso to face the Crusaders. Game time is Tuesday, February 5, at 9:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.
