MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

For the second consecutive NCAA Tournament game in Birmingham, a Butler sharpshooter nailed eight three-pointers en route to a game-high 26 points as the Bulldogs defeated the South Alabama Jaguars 81-61. Playing the role of Darnell Archey, who was 8-of-9 from behind the arc against Louisville in 2003, was Pete Campbell, who connected on 8-of-10 triples to key the Butler attack. There were four ties and 13 lead changes to start the game. USA held a 23-22 advantage at the 7:32 mark of the opening frame before Butler took the lead for good on a Campbell jumper, keying seven unanswered points for the Bulldogs and starting what would become a 25-7 run to end the half, giving Butler a 47-30 lead at the break. Campbell had 20 points at halftime, nailing six of his eight three-point attempts. The Jaguars forced a pair of turnovers to start the half and got as close as 12 points at 50-38 with 16:43 left. A 12-0 Butler run put an end to any comeback hopes USA had. The Bulldogs' biggest lead was 27 points at 72-45 and again at 74-47 en route to the 81-61 final score.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Campbell. The numbers speak for themselves: 9-of-11 overall, 8-of-10 from three-point range, game-high 26 points, five rebounds.

A. J. Graves finished with 18 points, six assists, four steals, and no turnovers in 29 minutes. Matt Howard added 11 points and four rebounds. Avery Jukes had nine points off the bench. Shawn Vanzant had five points and five rebounds in 21 key reserve minutes, most coming in the first half while Mike Green was in foul trouble. Green had five points and three assists. Julian Betko finished with three points. Drew Streicher had two points and six rebounds while Willie Veasley added two points. USA was led by Daon Merritt's 14 points.

When Green picked up his second foul at the 10:08 mark of the first half, I was concerned that the offense would stagnate as it has so often in the past when Mike is out for an extended period. Instead, Butler was able to turn a 20-19 deficit into a 47-30 lead at halftime. Graves was stellar running the point, Vanzant provided solid play off the bench, and Campbell took care of the offense. Butler's defense held Demetric Bennett, averaging 20.1 ppg, to just six points. A solid win for Butler and a great way to start tournament play.

Butler will face a familiar foe when Bruce Pearl and his Tennessee Volunteers square off against the Bulldogs in second round action. Game time is Sunday, March 23, at 2:30 p.m. EDT. The game will be televised live on CBS.
