MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

It took overtime, but the Butler Bulldogs finally fought off the Virginia Tech Hokies, 84-78, in the semifinals of the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, AK. It was very much a nip-and-tuck game to start, with three ties and five lead changes. VT led 14-13 at the 13:01 mark when the Bulldogs scored seven of the next eight points to take a 20-15 lead. An A. J. Graves three-pointer with 2:13 left in the half put the Bulldogs up 30-23, but the Hokies scored the final five points of the half to pull within two at halftime, 30-28. VT took its final lead of the game at 33-32 early in the second half. Butler broke a 38-38 tie with a 6-0 run to get some breathing room, but as was the case all night, the Hokies fought back. The Bulldogs gained some momentum towards the middle of the second half, pulling out to an 11-point lead at 63-52 with just over nine minutes left, their biggest lead of the game. Graves' three-pointer with 3:05 left in regulation gave the Bulldogs a 68-62 lead. That represented Butler final points in regulation. Despite the offensive drought, the Bulldogs still held a 68-64 lead with 0:44 to go. Jeff Allen's layup cut the lead to two with 0:36 left. Pete Campbell attempted a baseball pass over the top of VT's press, but the Hokies stole the ball, setting up Allen for the game-tying layup and a chance to take the lead with a free throw. Allen missed the free throw and Butler rebounded, setting up the final play of regulation. Graves drove the left side of the floor, but his foot slipped when he planted for his jumper, it came up short, and the game went to overtime tied at 68.

Mike Green gave Butler the lead for good with a layup, then following a VT miss at the other end, made a pair of free throws to put the Bulldogs up 72-68 with 3:15 left in overtime. A VT jumper by Malcolm Delaney cut it to two, but a Campbell three-pointer put the Bulldogs back up by five. The Hokies twice more cut the lead to three, but would get no closer as the Bulldogs made four of six free throws in the final 0:33 to ice an 84-78 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Green. Mike finished with 23 points, five assists and four rebounds with just one turnover in 44 minutes.

Campbell led all scorers with 26 points, 21 coming via the three-pointer, along with five rebounds. Graves added 17 points and six assists. Julian Betko had eight points and three rebounds. Drew Streicher had four points and three rebounds before fouling out. Willie Veasley made his regular season debut after missing the first four games with a knee injury, finishing with 4 points and some tough defense in the post in his eight minutes. Matt Howard had two points prior to his fifth foul. VT was led by Allen's 21 points and nine rebounds.

Butler battled through frontcourt foul trouble the entire night, and the defensive efforts from Betko and Veasley against much bigger opponents in the post were tremendous. Butler followed its Shootout-record 17 three-pointers in the opening round with 14 tonight. The Bulldogs had 15 assists against 10 turnovers, and was outrebounded just 35-31 despite the size disadvantage. A hard-fought win against quality competition.

Butler will face the Texas Tech/Gonzaga winner in the Shootout championship game. Game time is Sunday, November 25, at 12:30 a.m. EST (half past midnight, Saturday night/Sunday morning). The game will be televised live on ESPN2.
