MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs overcame a cold three-point shooting night by attacking the basket and getting to the foul line in defeating the Green Bay Phoenix 74-65 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler held an early 4-0 lead and led again by four at 8-4. A 12-2 Green Bay run put the guests on top 16-10 at the 13:11 mark. Butler scored five unanswered points to pull within one, but the Phoenix pushed its lead back to eight at 27-19. A 10-2 Butler run erased that deficit and tied the game at 29 apiece. Green Bay had a 5-0 run, but the Bulldogs held the Phoenix scoreless over the final 3:23 to take a 37-34 halftime lead. Butler took the lead for good on a Willie Veasley layup which keyed a 6-0 Bulldog spurt, giving the hosts a 43-38 advantage. The Dawgs slowly pushed their lead out to as many as 12 at 61-40 with 7:24 to go. Green Bay refused to go quietly, closing to within five on two occasions, but would get no closer. Butler made 6-of-8 free throws in the final 75 seconds to clinch a 74-65 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Matt Howard. Howard led all scorers with 22 points, 16 of which came in the first half, and pulled down nine rebounds. He was 12-of-15 at the foul line.

Mike Green added 18 points and nine rebounds. A. J. Graves continued to struggle from the perimeter in HL play (0-of-4 from three-point range) but was 4-of-6 inside the arc and 5-for-6 at the foul line for 13 points to with the three rebounds. Zach Hahn had a career-high eight points. Veasley provided a huge lift off the bench, finishing with seven points (all in the second half) along with a career-high 11 rebounds, six of which were on the offensive end. Pete Campbell added five points. Avery Jukes had a free throw for one point. Green Bay was led by Terry Evans' 12 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks.

Butler's shot chart in the second half showed only eight shot attempts which weren't layups, all of which were missed. The Bulldogs got 18 points off nine made layups and 19 free throws for their 39 points in the final frame. I don't think I've ever seen a Butler shot chart that looked like that. On a night where the three's weren't falling (3-of-19 for 16%), Butler was content to have Green attack the basket off the dribble, much like he did against Valparaiso last Saturday, and/or feed Howard in the post and let him go to work underneath. The result was 34 points in the paint and 41 free throw attempts, 28 of which came from Howard and Green. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Phoenix 38-30, including 14 offensive boards which led to 17 second chance points. It wasn't the prettiest basketball you'll see Butler play, but it still goes as a win.

Butler ends its brief two-game homestand by facing arguably the HL's hottest team. The Milwaukee Panthers, winners of six straight and fresh off a 71-69 win at Valparaiso, will come to Hinkle looking to continue their solid play of late. Game time is Saturday, January 12, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
