MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs dug themselves out of an early 12-point deficit and overcame a buzzer-beating three-pointer to force overtime in defeating the Milwaukee Panthers 83-75 at US Cellular Arena. Milwaukee jumped out to a 15-3 lead and kept its advantage between six and 10 points for most of the opening frame. It was 27-17 when the Bulldogs went on a 12-0 run to take a 29-27 lead at the 2:25 mark. The Panthers scored the final five points of the half to take a 32-29 lead at halftime. After Butler tied the game at 33 early in the second half, Milwaukee used a 5-0 spurt to regain the lead, one which they held until a Pete Cambpell jumper tied the score at 51 apiece. Avery Jukes' layup gave Butler a 58-56 lead, but the Panthers held the Bulldogs without a point for almost four minutes in regaining a 64-58 advantage. Butler finally ended the scoring drought with two free throws each from Willie Veasley and Mike Green, then a Campbell three-pointer put the Bulldogs ahead 65-64 with 0:50 left in regulation. Green hit two more free throws with five seconds to go, but Ricky Franklin hit a three-pointer just ahead of the buzzer to force overtime, tied at 67.

Overtime became the Mike Green show, as the senior guard scored 10 of Butler's 16 points in the extra session. Campbell's three-pointer gave Butler the lead for good at 70-67. Milwaukee would get no closer than three, as the Bulldogs sealed the game at the foul line to earn a hard-fought 83-75 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Green. He continues to stuff the stat sheet and make his case for Player of the Year honors. He nearly had a triple-double with 24 points (tying his career-high), 13 rebounds (a new career high), and eight assists. He was a perfect 10-of-10 at the foul line, forced a pair of steals, and committed just two turnovers in 39 minutes. Plus he left the game briefly after injuring his ankle on a drive to the basket. Just a phenomenal effort.

Veasley provided a tremendous spark off the bench, finishing with 12 points (matching his career-best effort) and seven rebounds. Campbell added 12 points and four rebounds. A. J. Graves struggled through a 2-of-14 shooting night to finish with 11 points, four assists, three rebounds, and three steals. Zach Hahn made three big three-pointers in the first half when Butler was struggling to score to finish with nine points. Matt Howard had five points and five rebounds before fouling out. Jukes and Shawn Vanzant finished with four points each. Drew Streicher added two points and three blocks. Milwaukee was led by Marcus Skinner's career-high 25 points.

The bench came up big in the first half when the Bulldogs seemingly couldn't buy a basket. 19 of Butler's 29 first half points were scored by reserves, and the Bulldogs' bench outscored the Panthers' 41-10. Butler struggled from three-point range, finishing the game at 29%, but the ones they hit came at key points in the game. Perhaps the most impressive stat was that the Bulldogs committed just seven turnovers, leading to a 16-1 advantage in points off turnovers. While Butler certainly struggled at times, to come out of this three-game road swing with three wins was impressive, and positions the Bulldogs for the stretch run in HL play.

Butler finishes the regular season with five of six games at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Up first is a visit from the Youngstown State Penguins. Game time is Thursday, February 14, at 7:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
