MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs clinched the Horizon League regular season title with a hard-fought 66-61 victory over the Wright State Raiders at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs pushed out to a 16-9 lead, but a 12-3 Raider run put the guests on top 21-19 with 8:39 left in the opening frame. WSU later led 23-22 when a three-pointer from Julian Betko put the Bulldogs ahead 25-23. They would not trail again in the game, although the Raiders tied the score at 25 and again at 29. A 7-0 spurt from the Bulldogs seemed to swing momentum to the home team before halftime, but Mike Green missed a pair of late free throws and Vaughn Duggins rattled in a three-pointer at the buzzer to pull the Raiders within four at the break, 36-32. Butler's lead swelled to as many as nine at 46-37 following a Pete Campbell three-pointer at the 13:53 mark. An 8-0 WSU run cut the Raiders' deficit to one at 46-45. It was a one-point game again at 48-47 when the Bulldogs scored seven unanswered points to take a 55-47 lead with 5:35 left. Undaunted, WSU continued to chip away but could never erase the deficit completely, pulling as close as three with four seconds to go before a pair of A. J. Graves sealed the game and the Horizon League regular season title, 66-61.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Betko. JB set a career-high in points (17) and three-pointers (five), all in the first half. He also had three steals. His previous season-high of 14 points also came against Wright State.

Green had 15 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, and just one turnover in 37 minutes. Matt Howard added 12 points, five rebounds, and three blocked shots. Graves finished with 11 points. Campbell added seven points and five rebounds. Avery Jukes had four points. WSU was led by Duggins' 17 points.

The 68 combined points at halftime were just 17 fewer than the two squads managed for the entire game in their previous meeting. Green and Graves, who combined for just 12 points in the loss at Wright State, went for 26 tonight. Butler had 14 assists against just six turnovers. Free throw shooting continues to be a concern, as the Bulldogs failed to eclipse the 70% mark for the fifth straight game, but they were 83% at the foul line in the second half. Congratulations to the Bulldogs on clinching the Horizon League regular season championship!

Butler plays its final regular season home game when they host the Detroit Titans. Game time is Saturday, March 1, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
