MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs set season highs in points, shooting percentage, and assists in defeating the Youngstown State Penguins 89-73 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. YSU built an early 7-2 lead. It was tied at 9 and again at 11 before Butler took the lead for good on a pair of free throws from Matt Howard and a three-pointer from Zach Hahn to make it 16-11. YSU twice pulled within two points, at 16-14 and again at 23-21, but would get no closer. A couple of Butler scoring runs quickly pushed the lead to double figures, topping out at 18 points before a late YSU basket set the halftime margin at 16 points, 50-34. The Bulldogs used a 9-2 spurt at the start of the second half to push their lead above 20, where it remained for most of the second half. With the bulk of the starters on the bench for the final 12 minutes, the bench saw extended playing time and pushed the lead to as much as 26 at 75-49 with 9:02 to go. YSU eventually got the deficit under 20, getting as close as 15, but never seriously threatened as Butler cruised to an 89-73 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Avery Jukes. The Alabama transfer had the best game of his young college career, finishing with a career-high 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go with two rebounds.

Mike Green continued his solid play of late with 17 points, six assists, and five rebounds. A. J. Graves added 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting along with five rebounds. Howard added 12 points and three rebounds. Pete Campbell had nine points, while Hahn finished with eight points and four assists. Willie Veasley had six points, Drew Streicher added five, and Julian Betko and Shawn Vanzant finished with three points each. YSU was led by Byron Davis' game-high 20 points.

The offensive numbers were impressive: 89 points, 62% shooting overall, and 20 assists were all season-highs for Butler, and the 65% effort from three-point range was just short of the 67% the team shot from long range against Texas Tech in Alaska. Butler's 50 points in the opening frame were its highest point total in a half this season. The assist-to-turnover ratio of 20-to-7 was also impressive. The only two negatives were free throw shooting (63%) and defense (YSU shot 58% for the game), but they were far outweighed by the positives.

Butler concludes its brief two-game homestand when they host the Cleveland State Vikings. Game time is Saturday, February 16, at 2:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on SportsTime Ohio. Hope to see you there.
