MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs bounced back from Thursday's disappointing loss at Cleveland State with a 78-69 win over the Youngstown State Penguins at the Beeghly Center. YSU held an early 11-9 lead when a 12-0 Butler run put the Bulldogs in the lead for good at 21-11 at the 9:18 mark of the first half. Butler led by as many as 20 in the first half and held a 40-22 advantage at halftime. YSU got Butler's lead down to eight at 54-46 with 10:31 to go. That's when the Bulldogs went on a 12-0 run, keyed by four straight three-pointers--two from Pete Campbell and two from A. J. Graves--to push their lead back out to 20 at 66-46 with just under eight minutes to go. Butler's advantage was again 20 at 73-53 with 4:51 left, but YSU outscored the Bulldogs 16-5 down the stretch to make the final score 78-69.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Take your pick. Matt Howard led Butler with 20 points and eight rebounds. Mike Green nearly had a triple-double, finishing with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists. Cambpell added 19 points, was 5-of-8 from three-point range, pulled down four rebounds, and made three steals.

Graves finished with nine points, four steals, and three assists. Julian Betko added six points. Willie Veasley had five points and four rebounds off the bench. Drew Streicher added three points before fouling out. YSU was led by Jack Liles' game-high 21 points.

I won't pick this game apart too much. They got off to a slow start, shots started to drop, they built a big lead, YSU whittled it down, they pushed it back out to 20, and played a little careless in the final five minutes with a big lead. Stats of note: Butler was 11-of-25 from three-point range (44%), made 11 steals, and had 16 assists.

Butler returns home for a pair of games against the Chicago contingent of the Horizon league. Up first are the Loyola Ramblers. Game time is Thursday, January 24, at 7:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
