MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs overcame a slow start and finish to the first half in defeating the Ball State Cardinals 64-55 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler connected on just one of its first nine shots as Ball State jumped out to an 8-2 lead. It was 10-4 Cardinals when an 11-0 run gave the Bulldogs the lead for good at 15-10 with 10:38 left in the opening frame. After a 4-0 spurt from BSU, Butler reeled off a 13-2 run to take a 28-16 lead with 5:43 to go in the half. Shortly thereafter, Matt Howard picked up his second foul and the Cardinals closed the half on a 13-3 run to pull within two at halftime, 31-29. Butler held Ball State scoreless for the first 6:12 of the second half, scoring nine unanswered points to take a 40-29 lead. The Bulldogs held their biggest lead of the game of 14 points at 54-40 and again at 56-42 following a Howard layup with 7:21 to go. That would be the final field goal of the contest for Butler. The Bulldogs were 8-of-14 from the foul line for the rest of the game, but BSU could get no closer than eight over that span, and Butler emerged victorious, 64-55.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Howard. Matt was the only Bulldog to reach double figures with 15 points. He also had team-highs of six rebounds and three assists.

Gordon Hayward had nine points and four rebounds. Garrett Butcher provided a big lift off the bench with three first-half three-pointers for nine points. Willie Veasley added seven points and four rebounds. Shelvin Mack had six points, four rebounds, and three steals. Ronald Nored and Grant Leiendecker also finished with six points apiece, with Leiendecker dishing out three assists. Shawn Vanzant had four points, while Avery Jukes added two points. Zach Hahn did not score but corralled five rebounds. BSU was led by the double-doubles of Anthony Newell (17 points and 11 rebounds) and Jarrod Jones (14 points and 12 rebounds).

Butler did a much better job of taking care of the basketball, committing just six turnovers after totaling 16 miscues in the opener at Drake. Butler held an 18-7 advantage in points off turnovers, and the Bulldog bench outscored their Cardinal reserve counterparts 21-2. Ball State did a good job in the first half of causing Butler's defense to overrotate, but the Bulldogs did a better job of helping and recovering as the game progressed. One glaring stat was Butler's foul shooting, as the Bulldogs managed just 13-of-25 (52%) at the free throw line, including a 48% mark in the second half. Hopefully that's an aberration, but it does raise potential concerns about the team's ability to close out games it's leading when the opposition begins to foul. Butler was also outrebounded 40-32.

The Bulldogs continue their four-game homestand when they host Indiana University-South Bend, where Butler assistant coach Micah Shrewsberry served as head coach before joining the Bulldog staff last season. Game time is Saturday, November 22, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
