MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs clinched the Horizon League regular season title and corresponding hosting rights for the upcoming league tournament with a thrilling 58-56 victory over the Cleveland State Vikings at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler scored the game's first five points en route to a 12-8 lead at the 15:43 mark. CSU then scored nine unanswered points over the next 1:40 to pull ahead by five at 17-12. A 13-3 Butler spurt put the hosts back on top, then the Bulldogs took their biggest lead of the game at 36-25 with 1:52 left in the period. CSU scored seven of the final nine points of the half to close within six at halftime, 38-32. Points were at a premium to start the second half as the teams combined for 10 points over the first five minutes. Butler held CSU scoreless from the 15:02 mark until a pair of free throws from Trevon Harmon with 9:51 left. The Bulldogs twice pushed their lead to 10, the latter time coming at 50-40 with 9:34 to go. The Vikings held Butler scoreless for just over five minutes, going on a 12-0 run to regain the lead 52-50 and set up an exciting finish. Butler tied the game twice before Cedric Jackson found George Tandy for a layup and a chance for a three-point play. Tandy missed the free throw and a CSU missed two put-back opportunities before Ronald Nored corralled the rebound. Gordon Hayward was fouled rebounding Shelvin Mack's missed three-pointer and split his free throws to make it 56-55. Matt Howard stole the ball from a driving Jackson, leading to a three-point attempt by Willie Veasley. It was short, but Nored hustled from the top of the key for the rebound and lay up to put Butler on top to stay, 57-56. Veasley rebounded J'Nathan Bullock's missed jumper and CSU was forced to foul Nored. Ronald split his free throws, giving the Vikings a chance to go for the win with 0:16 left. Cole curled off a pair of screens for the potential game-winning three-pointer, but Howard jumped out enough to alter the shot but not draw a foul, and Cole's shot was well short. Mack got the rebound and was fouled. He missed both free throws, but a desperation heave at the buzzer was well short and the Bulldogs survived for a 58-56 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Veasley. Willie had a career-high 16 points to go with seven rebounds.

Howard had 12 points, while Nored added 11 points and five rebounds. Hayward finished with nine points, six rebounds, and three steals. Mack had eight points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Shawn Vanzant had Butler's only two bench points. CSU was led by Cole's game-high 17 points.

Butler's second half free throw shooting nearly cost the Bulldogs the game, managing just 2-of-12 (17%). For the game, Butler shot an impressive 56% overall but just 19% from three-point range and 43% from the foul line. The Vikings forced 16 Bulldog turnovers but committed 14 themselves. Not the most aesthetically-pleasing finish to a game by the Bulldogs, but they did enough to get the win and secure hosting rights for next week's league tournament.

Butler will await the results of Tuesday's opening round games and Friday's quarterfinals before knowing who they will face Saturday night. Game time will be Saturday, March 7, at 7:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on ESPNU. Hope to see you there.
