MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Cleveland State Vikings earned their first trip to the NCAA tournament since their Sweet 16 run in 1986 with a 57-54 victory over the Butler Bulldogs in the Horizon League tournament finals at Hinkle Fieldhouse. There were three ties and two lead changes to start the game. Butler used an 8-2 run to break an 11-11 tie and eventually pushed its lead out two eight on two occasions, the latter coming at 28-20 with 3:29 left in the opening frame. CSU used an 8-0 run to tie the score at 28, but a pair of Butler layups over the final 1:08 of the half put the Bulldogs on top by four at halftime, 32-28. Butler again extended the margin to eight at 39-31 to start the second half. CSU tied the score at 42 and again at 44. Matt Howard's two free throws gave the Bulldogs a 48-47 lead with 10:11 remaining, one that turned out to be their last. The Vikings used a 7-0 run to take the lead for good. Gordon Hayward's tip-in at the 6:18 mark ended Butler's scoring drought and was the final Bulldog basket of the game. Cedric Jackson's layup with 4:56 left made it 56-50 CSU. Butler held the Vikings scoreless for the next 4:42, putting the Bulldogs in position to regain the lead. They went 4-of-6 at the foul line to make it a two-point game with 3:01 left. Missed shots and turnovers by both teams defined the next two minutes of game play. Shelvin Mack's missed three-pointer went out of bounds off a CSU player, but Hayward's ensuing layup bounced out and Butler was forced to foul to send the Vikings to the line at the 0:33 mark. Jeremy Montgomery missed the front end of a one-and-one and Shawn Vanzant pulled down the rebound, but Norris Cole stole the ball from Mack and was fouled. He split his free throws with 0:14 on the clock, giving Butler the chance to tie. But three-point attempts by Mack and Hayward bounced out, and Vanzant was unable to get a third attempt in the air before the buzzer, giving the Vikings a 57-54 victory and a trip to the Big Dance.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mack. Shelvin broke out of his offensive slump, leading the Bulldogs with 18 points along with a career-best nine rebounds.

Howard had 14 points and three rebounds. Ronald Nored added eight points and three rebounds. Hayward finished with seven points and nine rebounds. Willie Veasley added five points. Garrett Butcher had Butler's only two bench points. CSU was led by tournament MVP Jackson's 19 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds.

Howard summed it up best. "It just comes down to who executes the best down the stretch, " he said. "They made the plays they needed to to win the game. The last two games, that was us making those plays." One needs look no further than the three-point totals to find the difference on the stat sheet. CSU was 10-of-19 (53%), Butler 4-of-19 (21%).

Butler will now wait out Selection Sunday to find out what happens next. The brackets will be revealed on Sunday, March 15, at 6:00 p.m. EDT on CBS.
