MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Zach Hahn's three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Butler Bulldogs a come-from-behind 50-48 victory over the Cleveland State Vikings at the Wolstein Center. Butler held a 15-10 lead at the 12:23 mark when CSU reeled off nine unanswered points to take a 19-15 lead. The Bulldogs pulled to within one at 21-20, but the Vikings closed the half on a 6-0 run over the final 4:54 to take a 27-20 halftime lead. Butler pulled within two points twice to start the second period, at 29-27 and again at 35-33. Another CSU run, this one a 6-0 spurt, gave the hosts their biggest lead of the game at 41-33 with 6:01 to go. The Bulldogs battled back to tie the game at 44 with under a minute to go, setting up an exciting finish. J'Nathan Bullock missed a jumper, but George Tandy got the offensive rebound and was fouled. He made the first free throw but missed the second. The loose ball was eventually corralled by D'Aundray Brown, and Butler was forced to foul again. This time Cedric Jackson stepped to the line, splitting his two free throws to give the Vikings a 46-44 lead. Following a CSU timeout, Gordon Hayward found a wide-open Shawn Vanzant, who buried a three-pointer to put Butler in front 47-46 with 0:19 left. That was the Bulldogs' first lead since a 15-14 advantage at the 9:32 mark in the first half. The Vikes called another timeout and set up Bullock on an isolation play on the left block. He worked Matt Howard toward the middle of the lane, then made a nice drop step to his right for a layup with 5.4 seconds left, giving the Vikings a 48-47 lead. Butler called its final timeout to set up one last play. Hayward received the inbounds pass, stumbled briefly while bringing the ball up the right side of the court. He threw a cross-court pass to Hahn, who pump-faked a CSU defender in the air, took one dribble, and fired up what proved to be the game-winning three-pointer over Bullock's outstretched hand as time expired, giving the Bulldogs an exciting 50-48 win in their HL opener.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Hayward. The freshman had a hand in nearly every Butler point down the stretch. Trailing by seven with under four minutes to play, Hayward hit two free throws, a three-pointer, another free throw, and assisted on the two big three's to end it. Only Howard's layup off a Willie Veasley assist did not directly involve Hayward, and even then I believe it was Gordon who set the screen to free Matt for his shot. Hayward finished with eight points, 12 rebounds, three assists, and three blocks.

No Butler player reached double digits. Veasley was closest with nine points along with five rebounds and four assists. Howard finished with seven points and seven rebounds after being limited to five minutes in the first half due to foul trouble. Ronald Nored added seven points and five rebounds. Hahn had six points and three rebounds. Vanzant added five points and five rebounds, while Shelvin Mack and Garrett Butcher each finished with four points and three rebounds. CSU was led by Jackson's 11 points and 10 rebounds.

It was a brutal shooting night for both teams. Butler, after hitting its first three three-point attempts, missed 10 in a row and 14 of the next 15 from long range before connecting on its final three triples. The Bulldogs finished the night shooting 32% overall and 33% from three-point range. The Vikings shot just 26% and 9%, respectively. With that many missed shots, there were plenty of rebounds to be had. Butler won the battle of the boards, 46-44, despite allowing 20 CSU offensive rebounds. The Vikings forced the Bulldogs into 14 turnovers while committing just nine themselves, leading to a 16-8 CSU advantage in points off turnovers. It certainly wasn't the prettiest game, but Butler found a way to battle back against the preseason league favorite on the road and win where last year's team could not.

The Bulldogs finish their two-game December HL stint with a trip to Youngstown State to face the Penguins. Game time is Saturday, December 6, at 7:05 p.m. EST.
