MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs bounced back from consecutive losses in a big way, defeating the Davidson Wildcats 75-63 at a sold-out Belk Arena as part of ESPNU BracketBusters. Davidson took its only lead of the game at 3-2. Butler used a 10-0 run to break a 7-7 tie and take a lead it would not relinquish at 17-7 with 9:29 left in the first half. The lead bounced between four and 10 for the rest of the period, with the Bulldogs taking a 34-29 lead at halftime. Stephen Curry's three-pointer to start the second half pulled the Wildcats within two, but they could not get closer. Another 10-0 Butler run made sure of that. Curry's only other three-pointer of the game cut it to nine, but Gordon Hayward answered with a three of his own and the Bulldogs led by double figures thereafter. The high-water mark came on a breakaway dunk by Ronald Nored with 0:51 to give Butler a 17-point lead at 75-58, and the Bulldogs cruised to a 75-63 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Hayward. Gordon set a new career-high with 27 points to go with nine rebounds. He was 6-of-12 overall, 4-of-7 from three-point range, and 11-of-12 at the foul line.

Matt Howard had 12 points, five rebounds, and three assists in 20 foul-limited minutes. Willie Veasley added 10 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Shelvin Mack finished with nine points, six rebounds, and four assists. Nored had six points, four assists, three rebounds, and three steals in addition to playing solid defense on Curry. Garrett Butcher added six points before fouling out. Shawn Vanzant finished with five points. Davidson was led by Curry's 20 points.

The big question coming into the game was whether Curry would play. He played 37 minutes, and while he got 20 points (nine below his average), he was only 6-of-23 overall and 2-of-13 from behind the arc. While I'm sure his ankle played a role in those numbers, Nored's defensive effort was also a factor. Curry got very few open looks. Overall, Butler forced 19 turnovers, 10 coming via steals. Offensively, Butler's offense came out of its two-game hybernation. Howard did the early damage, scoring off several lob passes when Davidson fronted him without weak-side help, then Hayward got rolling from the perimeter. Gordon did a great job of getting to the free throw line as well, attempting a career-high 12 foul shots. A much-needed win, and one that the Bulldogs can hopefully build off of heading into the final week of the regular season and beyond.

Butler wraps up the regular season with a pair of Horizon League home games. Up first are the Youngstown State Penguins. Game time is Thursday, February 26, at 7:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised in Indianapolis on WNDY-TV 23. Hope to see you there.
