MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs bounced back from their first Horizon League loss and won their 20th game of the season, defeating the Detroit Titans 66-61 at Calihan Hall. The Bulldogs never trailed in the game, and there were only two early ties, but the Titans made sure Butler never felt comfortable with a lead. The Bulldogs were on top 11-10 when a 12-3 run extended their advantage to 23-13. Detroit pulled back within three at 25-22, then the Bulldogs closed the half on a 10-3 run to take a 35-25 lead at halftime. The second half got off to a slow start for both teams. Butler took its biggest lead of the game on a Gordon Hayward three-pointer with 15:37 left to pull ahead by 13, 42-29. Detroit used a 15-3 spurt to cut its deficit to one at 45-44 with 7:23 to go but could get no closer. Hayward connected on another three to give the Bulldogs some breathing room, and the margin stayed between four and eight points the rest of the way, with Butler holding on for a 66-61 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Hayward. Gordon led all scorers with 22 points for the second straight game to go with six rebounds. He was a perfect 4-of-4 from three-point range.

Shelvin Mack had 14 points. Matt Howard added eight points, eight rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. Garrett Butcher finished with six points off the bench. Willie Veasley had five points and three rebounds. Zach Hahn added five points, while Ronald Nored, Avery Jukes, and Shawn Vanzant finished with two points each. Vanzant suffered what appeared to be a knee injury after a made layup in the first half. He returned to the bench with a brace on his left leg but did not play. Detroit was led by Woody Payne's 21 points.

Much like the first meeting at Hinkle, Detroit's defense made things difficult for Butler's offense, particularly in the second half. Butler committed 17 turnovers, their third straight game with 16 or more miscues. On the plus side, the Bulldogs shot 55% overall and outrebounded Detroit 27-18. Not the prettiest game, but it still goes in the books as a win.

Butler wraps up its three-game road trip when it travels to Wright State to face the Raiders. Game time is Saturday, February 7, at 7:00 p.m. EST.

barb hollingsworth:
Zach Hahn and Ronald Nored are terrible. They get worse with each game.
