MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs suffered their first Horizon League defeat, losing to the Green Bay Phoenix 75-66 at the Resch Center. The first half was a back-and-forth affair with two ties and six lead changes. Butler led 8-5 when an 11-2 Phoenix run put the hosts on top by six, 16-10. The Bulldogs responded with a 12-2 spurt to take their biggest lead of the game at 22-18, a margin they would match at 24-20. Green Bay scored seven of the game's next eight points to pull ahead 27-25 with 2:26 left in the half. Butler regained the lead on Gordon Hayward's three-pointer at the 2:07 mark. It would prove to be Butler's last lead, as Troy Cotton's three-pointer put the Phoenix on top to stay, 30-28 at halftime. Green Bay scored the first six points of the second half and the Bulldogs were forced to play catch-up the entire period. After chipping the deficit down to two at 38-36, Butler's offense went cold as Green Bay reeled off eight unanswered points to push its advantage to double figures at 46-36. The Phoenix enjoyed its biggest lead at 58-45 with 6:57 remaining. That's when the Bulldogs seemed poised to make their run. A 10-1 spurt cut the lead to four, but the visitors would get no closer. Butler missed back-to-back three-pointers that would have cut the deficit to three, and Green Bay iced the game at the free throw line, earning a 75-66 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Hayward. Gordon led all scorers with 22 points to go with seven rebounds.

Matt Howard had 14 points, seven rebounds, and five blocks. Shelvin Mack added 10 points, eight assists, and five rebounds. Willie Veasley finished with eight points and four rebounds. Shawn Vanzant had five points. Ronald Nored added four points, four rebounds, and three assists. Zach Hahn hit a late triple for three-points. Avery Jukes pulled down five rebounds. Green Bay was led by Tillema's 21 points.

The stat sheet pretty much tells the story. The Bulldogs committed 16 turnovers while forcing just four. About the only thing Butler's defense created was Green Bay free throw attempts, including three separate three-shot fouls on Phoenix three-point attempts. The hosts made the most of their opportunities at the charity stripe, connecting on 32-of-35 foul shots (91%). Green Bay's man-to-man defense made open looks hard to come by and forced plenty of Butler miscues.

Butler continues its three-game road trip with a trip to Detroit to face the Titans. Game time is Thursday, February 5, at 8:05 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on Fox Sports Detroit.

barb hollingsworth:
Point guard is Butler's weak link. Vanzant should be starting. Better yet, move
Hayward or Mack to the point and start Butcher or Jukes. Have a good day,
barb

nored = no points
