PLAYER OF THE GAME: Matt Howard. The sophomore had his highest point total since the end of December, finishing with 19 points to go with eight rebounds. He was a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor and 7-of-7 at the foul line and finished with fewer than four fouls for the first time since Butler's 78-48 win over Milwaukee on January 24.
Three other Bulldogs joined Howard in double figures. Gordon Hayward had 18 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Zach Hahn buried five three-pointers for the second straight game for 15 points along with three assists. Shelvin Mack added 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Garrett Butcher tied a career high with nine points. Ronald Nored finished with seven points and four assists. Willie Veasley added five rebounds. UIC was led by Josh Mayo's 19 points. Avery Jukes and Shawn Vanzant did not dress for Butler. Head coach Brad Stevens declined to talk specifics, citing privacy law, but did state that the team was preparing for Sunday's game against Loyola under the assumption that neither will play.
Butler shot 54% overall and 41% from three-point range, connecting on 13 triples. They had 17 assists against just eight turnovers, outrebounded UIC 39-29, and forced seven steals. Mayo scored 19 points, but it took him 17 shots.
Butler finishes its brief two-game homestand when it hosts the Loyola Ramblers. Game time is Sunday, February 15, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
