MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs dug themselves out of a 9-0 hole to start the game but were unable to overtake the LSU Tigers, losing 75-71 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum. Shelvin Mack's free throw at the 18:07 mark ended Butler's scoring drought to start the game. The Bulldogs' first field goal did not come until Willie Veasley's three-pointer with 14:02 left in the half made it 13-6. LSU pushed its lead to as many as 13 at 31-18 with 3:41 to go before halftime, but the Bulldogs went on an 11-4 run to close the half and pull within six at halftime, 35-29. Butler took its first lead of the game on a Ronald Nored-to-Willie Veasley alley-oop dunk to make it 42-41 at the 15:04 mark. Butler led twice more--at 44-43 and again at 54-53 with 9:16 to go--but LSU took the lead for good on Marcus Thornton's layup with 7:16 remaining. Butler tied it back up at 58 apiece, then the Tigers pushed their advantage out to seven points at 70-63 with 0:35 left. A late flurry pulled Butler within three twice over the final 14 seconds, but LSU sealed the game at the foul line and held on for a 75-71 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Matt Howard. Despite being limited to seven minutes in the first half, Howard led Butler with 22 points and eight rebounds. He was 10-of-13 from the foul line.

Shelvin Mack had 18 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Gordon Hayward added 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Veasley finished with seven points and four rebounds. Avery Jukes added six points and four rebounds off the bench. Nored had four points and three assists. Zach Hahn had a pair of free throws for two points. LSU was led by Thornton's game-high 30 points.

The slow start certainly didn't help, but the Bulldogs were able to overcome it and take the lead. But ultimately there were too many turnovers, too many missed layups, and too much Thorton. Butler outrebounded the Tigers 34-30 but committed 15 turnovers, 11 coming in the first half.

I'd like to thank the players and staff for a terrific season. Work hard this offseason and we'll see you again in the fall.
