MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs dug themselves an 18-point deficit from which they could not emerge, falling to the Loyola Ramblers 71-67 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler's early 2-0 lead was its only of the game, as the Ramblers scored the game's next five points to take an advantage they would not relinquish. Butler pulled within one at 8-7 with 15:10 left in the half when the Ramblers went on an 11-0 run to jump ahead 19-7 at the 10:56 mark. The Bulldogs pulled within eight on two occasions, at 19-11 and again at 21-13. Loyola then went on a decisive 13-3 run to take its biggest lead of the game, 34-16 with 1:47 to go in the period. Butler pulled to within 14 at halftime, 37-23. That lead fluctuated between nine and 14 for the first 10 minutes of the second frame. Butler got it down to six at 53-47 with 9:05 left, but Loyola pushed back out to a 12-point advantage twice, the latter coming at 63-51 with 5:29 to go. The Bulldogs made a furious comeback attempt over the final few minutes. Willie Veasley hit a three-pointer with 1:09 remaining to pull within three at 69-66. Following a steal, Matt Howard was fouled and split a pair of free throws to make it a two-point game. Loyola's Marcus Thomas then committed a backcourt violation with 0:26 on the clock, giving Butler the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead. Veasley got the ball underneath but was unable to convert the layup amid some tough Loyola defense, and Butler was forced to foul. John Benkoske missed the front end of a one-and-one, once again giving the Bulldogs a chance to tie. Gordon Hayward's post entry pass to Howard was off the mark, forcing Butler to foul. Justin Cerasoli calmly sank both free throws, clinching a 71-67 Rambler victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Matt Howard. Matt finished with a career-high 30 points along with nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

Hayward added 14 points and nine rebounds. Veasley finished with 13 points and three rebounds. Shelvin Mack had five points on just 1-of-10 shooting along with three rebounds. Zach Hahn had Butler's only three bench points. Ronald Nored added two points, five assists, and four rebounds. Loyola was led by Jordan Hicks' career-high 23 points and eight rebounds.

Butler lost this game in the first half. The Bulldogs shot just 38% overall and 18% from three-point range and allowed Loyola to shoot 47% and 40%, respectively. Butler committed nine turnovers while forcing just two, leading to a 12-1 Loyola advantage in points off turnovers. The Bulldogs also missed their first seven free throws. Things improved in the second half, with Butler connecting on 50% of its shots while committing just three turnovers, but the Bulldogs still couldn't find their three-point shot (27%) and ultimately were unable to overcome an 18-point first half deficit.

Butler hits the road for its final two regular season away games. Up first is a trip to Milwaukee to face the Panthers. Game time is Wednesday, February 18, at 8:00 p.m. EST.
