MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS
The Butler Bulldogs used a 22-0 run to take control early and cruise to a 78-55 victory over the Loyola Ramblers at the Gentile Center. Loyola held a 4-2 lead after three minutes of play before Butler went on the game-deciding run. Shelvin Mack hit three-pointers on three consecutive possessions to key the charge. Butler led by 20 at 24-4 and again at 27-7 before Loyola chipped its deficit down to 11 at 33-22. The Bulldogs led 39-24 at halftime. Butler then held Loyola scoreless for over five minutes to start the second half, scoring 12 unanswered points to take a 51-24 lead. Loyola would get no closer than 20 as Butler cruised to a 78-55 win.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mack. The freshman's personal 9-0 run set the tone in the first half. He finished with 20 points, four three-pointers, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Matt Howard had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds along with three blocked shots. Gordon Hayward added 11 points and eight rebounds. Avery Jukes finished with 10 points off the bench. Willie Veasley had eight points and seven rebounds. Shawn Vanzant, Zach Hahn, and Grant Leiendecker finished with three points each, with Vanzant dishing out four assists. Garrett Butcher added two points and three rebounds. Ronald Nored had six assists with just one turnover. Loyola was led by Ross Forman's 13 points off the bench.
Butler held Loyola's starting five to just nine points on 3-of-20 shooting. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Ramblers 43-26 and outshot them 50% to 34% overall and 50% to 37% from three-point range. A solid road win at a place where Butler has struggled in the past.
Butler wraps up the Chicago swing with a visit to UIC to battle the Flames. Game time is Saturday, January 17, at 2:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.
