MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The new look Butler Bulldogs started exhibition play with a 61-31 victory over the Marian Knights at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler scored the game's first eight points en route to a 15-2 lead to start the game. Marian closed to within nine at 15-6, the final time the deficit would be under double figures. The Bulldogs pushed their lead to 17 at 27-10 before a pair of Knight free throws made the halftime score 27-12. Marian got as close as 12 at 29-17 before Butler's offense warmed up. The Bulldogs held a 32-point lead with under two minutes to go and cruised to a 61-31 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Matt Howard. The sophomore forward had a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Shelvin Mack had 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Gordon Hayward added eight points. Willie Veasley finished with seven points and seven rebounds. Ronald Nored had five points and five rebounds. Avery Jukes added five points and four rebounds. Garrett Butcher had four points and five rebounds. Grant Leiendecker added three points. Sophomores Zach Hahn and Shawn Vanzant had two points each, with Vanzant pulling down three rebounds. Marian was led by Anthony Furlin's nine points.

Neither team shot well in the first half. Butler connected on just 29% of its attempts in the opening frame, including just 1-of-16 from three-point range. Marian shot only 17%. The Bulldogs improved to 50% (both overall and from three) in the second half. Butler outrebounded Marian 49-25, including 18 offensive rebounds leading to a 14-2 advantage in second chance points. The Bulldogs forced 16 Marian turnovers, but had just an 8-to-14 assist-to-turnover ratio themselves.

Butler plays its final exhibition contest against the Oakland City Mighty Oaks. Game time is Saturday, November 8, at 7:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
