MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS
The Butler Bulldogs jumped out to a 22-3 lead and never looked back, defeating the Oakland City Mighty Oaks 91-52 in exhibition play at Hinkle Fieldhouse. After an early 2-2 tie, the Bulldogs scored 20 of the game's next 21 points to take control, fueled by three three-pointers by Shelvin Mack. The lead ballooned to as many as 36 points before a late OCU basket made the halftime score 56-22. Butler shot 61% overall and 50% (8-of-16) from three-point range in the opening frame, assisting on 16 of 19 made baskets. The Mighty Oaks scored the first six points of the second half but would get no closer. Butler's lead got back to 30 after a pair of Mack free throws, and would remain above 30 the remainder of the game. Alex's Anglin's conventional three-point play with 0:32 left gave the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the game and marked the game's final points, with Butler prevailing 91-52.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mack. The freshman led all scorers with 16 points, connecting on 4-of-6 attempts from three-point range.
All 14 Bulldogs scored. Shawn Vanzant was 4-of-5 from behind the arc en route to 13 points. Matt Howard had 12 points and four rebounds, while Avery Jukes added 12 points and three rebounds. Grant Leiendecker finished with eight points. A trio of Bulldogs finished with five points: Gordon Hayward (three rebounds, three assists), Garrett Butcher, and Emerson Kampen. Willie Veasley added four points and five rebounds. Anglin and Chase Stigall finished with three points each. Zach Hahn had two points, five assists and four rebounds, while Ronald Nored added two points, six assists, and three rebounds. Nick Rodgers finished with one point. OCU was led by Craig Parks' 15 points.
After finishing with an 8-to-14 assist-to-turnover ratio last week, Butler posted a 24-to-10 mark tonight. The Bulldogs had 10 steals and forced 27 turnovers in all. Butler was 15-of-33 (46%) from three-point range.
The Bulldogs kick off the regular season with a trip to Des Moines, IA, to face the Drake Bulldogs in a rematch of last year's BracketBusters matchup. Game time is Saturday, November 15, at 8:05 p.m. EST.
