MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs erased a 13-point deficit but could not overtake #21 Ohio State as the Buckeyes held on for a 54-51 victory at Value City Arena. Butler held two early leads before Ohio State used a 10-0 run to pull ahead 13-5 at the 13:55 mark of the opening frame. The Buckeyes would not trail again. Butler fought back to tie the game at 17 and again at 19, but OSU pushed back ahead and held a 29-23 halftime lead. Ohio State took its biggest lead of the game at 43-30 with 15:40 left and appeared to be on the verge of taking control of the game. Butler slowly and methodically chipped away at its deficit, eventually tying the game at 51 apiece on a Gordon Hayward three-pointer with 3:38 to go. That would be the final points the Bulldogs scored, as they were unable to capitalize on several opportunities down the stretch. Ronald Nored made a steal but was unable to convert the ensuing layup. Evan Turner's jumper then gave OSU the lead for good, 53-51. Missed three-pointers by Hayward and Shelvin Mack were sandwiched around a Willie Veasley steal. After two missed OSU free throws, Mack missed another three-pointer. Dallas Lauderdale split two free throws to make it 54-51 with just over a minute to go. Hayward missed a three-pointer. Butler chose not to foul, a decision which paid off when Turner missed a jumper and Matt Howard snared the rebound. Butler called a timeout set up a final play, but Hayward's leaning three-pointer at the buzzer was no good, and the Buckeyes won, 54-51.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Hayward. Gordon led all scorers with a career-high 25 points, connecting on 7-of-11 three-pointers. He also pulled down seven rebounds.

Mack added 13 points, seven assists, four rebounds, and three steals. Howard finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Veasley and Shawn Vanzant had a point each. OSU was led by Turner's 14 points.

Outside of Hayward, Butler struggled mightily on offense. Gordon was 8-of-15 (53%) overall and 7-of-11 (64%) from three-point range; the rest of the team was 7-of-32 (22%) and 1-of-11 (9%), respectively. Only five players scored, and the Bulldogs had more turnovers (19) than field goals (15). On the plus side, of those 15 field goals, 13 were assisted. Butler also forced 15 Buckeye turnovers and outrebounded a much-bigger OSU squad, 34-33. Bottom line, Butler made far too many mistakes, including a pair of lane violations, but still found a way to fight back and have a chance to tie at the end of the game.

Butler takes a week off for finals before returning to the Hinkle hardwood, where they will face Florida Gulf Coast. Game time is Saturday, December 20, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
