MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs overcame a 13-point first half deficit and withstood a second half charge in defeating the UAB Blazers 72-68 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The two teams battled through two ties and six lead changes over the first 11 minutes. An 11-0 Blazer run gave the visitors a 26-19 lead at the 7:52 mark of the opening frame. Butler pulled within two at 26-24 on a Shelvin Mack layup with 6:01 left in the half. UAB held the Bulldogs without a field goal for the next 5:36, building a 13-point lead before Zach Hahn's late jumper set the halftime margin at 11, 38-27 in favor of the Blazers. UAB forced 10 Butler miscues while committing just two, leading to a 16-2 advantage in points off turnovers. Mack set the tone to start the second half, hitting four three-pointers and two free throws to key an 18-4 run to put the Bulldogs up 45-42 with 14:47 to go. After a Robert Vaden three-pointer tied the game, another Mack three-pointer sparked a 7-0 run to put Butler on top to stay, 52-45. The Bulldogs built their lead up to 10 at 62-52 following a technical foul on UAB coach Mike Davis. The Blazers responded with an 11-2 run to pull within one at 64-63, but would get no closer. Butler closed the game going 6-of-8 at the foul line in the final minute to seal a 72-68 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mack. He almost single-handedly brought Butler back into the game, and his play seemed to ignite both the crowd and his teammates. He finished with 22 points, including 5-of-10 from three-point range, to go with four rebounds.

Matt Howard was Butler's other double-digit scorer, finishing with 19 points and three rebounds. Gordon Hayward added eight points and nine rebounds. Hahn, in his first action since the Ohio State game on the 13th, finished with eight points. Shawn Vanzant had six points and four rebounds. Willie Veasley finished with five points and three rebounds, while Avery Jukes added four points. UAB was led by Vaden's game-high 23 points.

UAB's defense forced 19 turnovers, but that same aggressive defense sent Butler to the foul line 31 times. Butler also held a 31-23 rebounding advantage. An 11-to-19 assist-to-turnover ratio usually spells defeat, but the Bulldogs were able to overcome those errors to defeat a very talented UAB squad.

Butler returns to Horizon League play when they travel to Valparaiso to face the Crusaders. Game time is Saturday, January 3, at 8:05 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on WFYI-Plus DT 20.3 in Indianapolis, Lakeshore Public Television in the Chicago area, and ESPN Full Court.
