MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs held off the upset-minded Detroit Titans 54-50 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler held a 13-10 lead at the 10:48 mark of the first half before Detroit scored six unanswered points to pull ahead. Following a Willie Veasley layup, the Titans went on another 6-0 run to make it 22-15 with 5:20 left in the period. Detroit's biggest lead came at 26-18 before Butler scored the final four points of the half to make it 26-22 at halftime. The Titans limited the Bulldogs to just 33% shooting and held a 16-9 rebounding advantage. Butler scored the first five points of the second half, setting the stage for a back-and-forth final 20 minutes which saw three ties and nine lead changes. The Bulldogs saw a six-point lead at 46-40 with 6:42 left turn into a 50-49 deficit at the 2:29 mark following a Jason Bennett tip-in. Ronald Nored split a pair of free throws to tie the score at 50. Nored then rebounded a missed shot by Jordan Fee, which led to a Gordon Hayward jumper with a toe on the three-point line, giving the Bulldogs a 52-50 lead with 1:40 to go. Matt Howard rebounded Eulis Stephens' missed three-point attempt, then Hayward's shot attempt was blocked out of bounds with one second left on the shot clock. Shelvin Mack's three-pointer off the inbounds pass was no good, and Detroit called timeout to set up their final play. Head coach Ray McCallum said after the game that the plan was to go for the win with a three-pointer, but the Bulldogs defended the perimeter well and forced the Titans to drive. Tryl Hartfield's runner in the lane bounced away, and Howard corralled the rebound, was fouled, and made two free throws to give Butler a hard-fought 54-50 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Avery Jukes. With Howard battling foul trouble in both halves, Jukes provided much-needed energy at both ends of the floor off the bench. He finished with eight points and a blocked shot.

Howard was Butler's only double-figure scorer with 15 points along with five rebounds. Veasley added nine points and five rebounds. Mack had seven points, four assists, and three rebounds. Hayward and Zach Hahn finished with five points each, with Hayward dishing out four assists. Nored had three points, while Shawn Vanzant added two points. Detroit was led by Stephens, Thomas Kennedy, and Eugene Blue, who finished with eight points each.

Detroit's defensive game plan was to take away Butler's perimeter attack and throw a 3-man rotation at Howard in the post, and they were quite successful. Butler had season lows of 10 three-point attempts and two made three's. Bennett, Blue, and Michael Harrington were charged with defending Howard one-on-one in the post, and while Howard finished with 15 points, they certainly didn't come easily. Butler's offense had little flow or continuity as the Titans's defense was very disruptive. Butler's defense was strong, holding Detroit to 39% shooting and forcing 16 turnovers, but the Bulldogs only got 12 points off of those Titans miscues. It wasn't a pretty game, but it still goes in the book as a 'W'.

Butler heads to Chicago for a pair of HL games. Up first are the Loyola Ramblers. Game time is Thursday, January 15, at 8:00 p.m. EST.
