MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs overcame a cold-shooting first half and a 13-point deficit in defeating the UIC Flames 59-52 at the UIC Pavilion. Butler's lone lead in the first half came early at 6-5, then UIC went on a 12-2 run to lead 17-8 with 7:22 left in the half. The Bulldogs missed their first 10 three point attempts of the game before Gordon Hayward hit back-to-back triples to snap the cold start from the perimeter and pull Butler within three. The Flames closed the half on an 11-3 run over the final six minutes to take a 28-17 lead at halftime. Butler was just 3-of-21 from three-point range in the first half, and Hayward was the only Bulldog to connect from long range. Scott VanderMeer's layup early in the second half game UIC its biggest lead of the game at 13 points, 30-17. The turning point came just ahead of the 16:00 media timeout when VanderMeer picked up his fourth foul with UIC leading 32-23. Without the 7-footer in the middle of UIC's zone, the Bulldog offense finally seemed willing to attack the Flames. Three-pointers started dropping for Butler, and UIC's lead slowly dwindled. Willie Veasley's three-pointer made it a one-point game at 42-41, then Veasley's steal and layup put Butler on top for the first time since the 15:58 mark of the first half. Tori Boyd's three-pointer returned the lead to the Flames at 45-43, but it would turn out to be their last. A 10-0 Butler run put the Bulldogs on top to stay, and Shelvin Mack's layup and four free throws over the final 1:10 sealed a 59-52 Butler victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Hayward. Gordon had nine of Butler's 17 points at halftime, and equalled career-highs with 25 points and seven three-point baskets. He also had seven rebounds and three steals.

Only three other Bulldogs scored. Mack flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 18 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. Veasley added 10 points. Howard had six points and four rebounds. Ronald Nored also pulled down four rebounds. UIC was led by Boyd's 13 points and nine rebounds.

It was good to see a young Butler team not get rattled by a cold start on offense. They continued to defend, which kept them in the game in the first half. They also continued to take open shots with confidence, and they finally started to go in. The defense on HL Preseason Player of the Year Josh Mayo was phenomenal. Primarily defended by Veasley with plenty of help on switches and double-teams, Mayo had seven points on just 3-of-12 shooting, including 0-of-6 from three-point range. Mayo averaged an HL-leading 18.1 ppg and was shooting 39% from beyond the arc entering the game. Another big road win for the Bulldogs.

Butler returns home for its next three games. Up first are the Green Bay Phoenix. Game time is Thursday, January 22, at 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised live in Indianapolis on WNDY-TV 23. Hope to see you there.
