MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back, rolling past the Milwaukee Panthers 78-48 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Shelvin Mack hit back-to-back three-pointers in the first minute to ensure that Butler wouldn't have a third straight slow start. The Panthers would get no closer than four points the rest of the way. Butler led 10-6 at the 11:19 mark when a 13-2 run made it 23-8 and forced a Milwaukee timeout with 7:48 left in the half. The Panthers twice cut their deficit to eight, but could not get closer. A pair of Shawn Vanzant free throws and a layup in the final minute gave Butler a 32-19 halftime lead. A 13-2 spurt by the Bulldogs to start the second half by and large eliminated any chance of a Panther comeback. A Ricky Franklin conventional three-point play with 3:17 left got Milwaukee within 18, then Butler ended the game on a 13-1 run, capped by a Vanzant dunk with 0:52 to go to give the Bulldogs a 78-48 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Vanzant. Shawn had a career-high 20 points and tied his career best with four assists. It was the first time Vanzant had a double-figure scoring game at Butler.

Mack had 14 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Grand Leiendecker added a career-high 12 points on four three-pointers. Willie Veasley had 10 points. Matt Howard finished with seven points and eight rebounds. Gordon Hayward added seven points, four rebounds, and a career-best four steals. Zach Hahn had a pair of triples for six points. Avery Jukes finished with two points and six rebounds. Milwaukee was led by Tone Boyle's 15 points.

Butler held the Panthers to just 3-of-24 shooting (13%) in the first half. Milwaukee was aggressive in attacking the paint and getting to the foul line, with 12 of their 19 first half points coming at the charity stripe. The Bulldogs made 15 three-pointers and shot 43% from behind the arc. Coach Brad Stevens said he thought it took Butler a while to adjust to Milwaukee's zone defense. After shooting 33% from behind the arc in the first half, the Bulldogs connected on 53% of their three-pointers after halftime. Butler also followed up Thursday's 63% shooting night at the foul line with an 83% effort this afternoon.

Butler closes out its three-game homestand when it hosts the Valparaiso Crusaders. Game time is Friday, January 30, at 7:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on ESPNU. Hope to see you there.

barb hollingsworth in walnut creek, CA:
Shawn Vanzant belongs in the starting lineup. I was thinking this BEFORE
today's game. Nored's point production is way too low to have so much playing
time. Yes, he's great on defense and assists, but his shooting is a real
liability. Even his free throws don't go down. Have a great day and thanks so
much for your well-written recaps. barb

p.s. If BU plays St. Mary's in the Bracketbuster, I will attend (Moraga is 10
miles from here).
