MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs erased a seven point first half deficit and used a 13-2 run to start the second half to defeat the Valparaiso Crusaders 75-62 at the ARC. Butler built a nine point lead at 17-8. Valpo then went on a 19-3 run to go on top 27-20 with 5:59 left in the half. Butler then responded with 11 unanswered points, with the Crusaders scoring the final four points of the half to tie it at 31 apiece. The Bulldogs took control with a 13-2 spurt to lead 44-33. They pushed their lead to as many as 15 on three separate occasions, the final of which came at 54-39 with 9:13 to go. Valpo then cut the deficit to six at 59-53 but could get no closer. Butler hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final minute to seal a 75-62 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Gordon Hayward. The freshman finished with a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. He also dished out four assists.

Three other Bulldogs finished in double figures. Matt Howard led the Bulldogs with 16 points, 14 of which came after halftime, to go with three rebounds and a pair of blocks. Willie Veasley added 15 points--all in the first half--and three rebounds. Shelvin Mack finished with 14 points and four assists. Shawn Vanzant had six points and four rebounds, while Grant Leiendecker also added six points. Avery Jukes finished with three points. Valparaiso was led by Brandon McPherson's game-high 22 points off the bench.

The first half was very much a back-and-forth affair, with five ties and four lead changes. Butler's defense held Valpo to just one field goal over the first six minutes of the second half, which was ultimately the difference. After nine first-half turnovers, Butler committed just three miscues after halftime. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Crusaders 36-22, and had 16 assists on 23 field goals.

Butler returns home for its next two HL contests. Up first are the Wright State Raiders. Game time is Thursday, January 8, at 7:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live in Indianapolis on WNDY.
