MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs used an 11-0 second half run to take the lead, then held off one final late charge to get past the Valparaiso Crusaders 59-51 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Things started very well for Butler, jumping out to a 10-0 at the 15:41 mark. Valpo then held the Bulldogs scoreless for nearly seven minutes, but only managed five points of its own over that span. The Bulldogs got things rolling again, pulling ahead by 11 at 19-8 with 5:18 left in the half. Another Butler drought led to an 11-0 Crusader run to even the score at 19, with the Bulldogs eventually taking a 24-22 halftime lead. Butler committed 12 turnovers in the opening frame while making just eight field goals. Valpo also had 12 turnovers, against seven made baskets. The Bulldogs scored the first six points of the second half and led by eight on four different occasions, the last of which came at 37-29 with 11:29 left. The Crusaders reeled off eight unanswered points to even the score at 37 apiece. A pair of Logan Jones free throws at the 6:05 mark gave Valpo its only lead of the game at 43-41. That's when the Bulldogs went on their 11-0 run to take a 52-43 advantage. But a three-pointer by Michael Rogers and a four-point play by Jake Diebler pulled the Crusaders within two at 52-50 with 1:31 left. Butler outscored Valpo 7-1 at the foul line over the final 91 seconds to earn a hard-fought 59-51 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Gordon Hayward. Gordon led all scorers with 18 points to go with three rebounds and three assists.

Willie Veasley had 13 points and four rebounds. Matt Howard added nine points, 11 rebounds, and three steals before fouling out. Shelvin Mack finished with eight points and seven rebounds. Zach Hahn had five points and three steals. Ronald Nored added three points and three rebounds. Garrett Butcher finished with three points off the bench. Valpo was led by Urule Igbavboa's 15 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and four blocks.

The second half shot chart told an interesting tale. Valpo attempted three layups and four mid-range jump shots. The remaining 15 attempts were from three-point range. Butler attempted six three-pointers and three mid-range shots, with layups comprising the other 15 attempts. Both defenses made life difficult for the opposing offense. The final numbers weren't pretty: neither team shot 40% (BU 38%, VU 36%), and they combined for 39 turnovers (BU 18, VU 21). Butler did outrebound Valpo 35-31 and had a season-high 13 steals.

Butler next embarks upon a tough three-game road trip. Up first is a trip to Green Bay to face the Phoenix. Game time is Monday, February 2, at 8:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on WHMB-TV 40.
