MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs overcame yet another cold-shooting first half en route to the best 18-game record in school history, defeating the Green Bay Phoenix 68-59 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Points were at a premium in the first half, as both teams' defenses dominated the opening period. Butler didn't score until the 16:10 mark on a Zach Hahn three-pointer. There were four ties and six lead changes, with the Phoenix using a 6-0 run to take a 23-18 lead with just over two minutes left in the half. Green Bay again led by five at 25-20 before a pair of Matt Howard free throws made it 25-22 at halftime. The Bulldogs shot just 28% overall and 23% from three-point range, but limited the Phoenix to 37% and 29%, respectively. Green Bay twice pushed its lead to six to start the second half, the latter coming at 33-27 with 16:58 left. A 7-0 Butler run put the hosts back on top, then following a Terry Evans dunk, another 7-0 run gave the Bulldogs the lead for good at 41-35 at the 9:55 mark. Butler's largest lead was nine points, a margin it held on four different occasions, including the final score, 68-59.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Shelvin Mack. Despite being held scoreless for the first 31:14 of the game, Mack finished with 11 points, eight assists, and five rebounds. The eight assists equaled his career high.

Howard led the Bulldogs with 15 points and eight rebounds. Gordon Hayward added 14 points and six rebounds. Willie Veasley, limited to just 19 minutes due to foul trouble after being whistled for two fouls in the first 18 seconds of the game, had nine points and four rebounds. Hahn added eight points off the bench, while fellow sophomore Shawn Vanzant finished with six points. Ronald Nored had three points, five rebounds, and three assists. Avery Jukes added two points and three rebounds. Green Bay was led by Rahmon Fletcher's game-high 22 points.

As beat writer David Woods noted after the game, Butler made just nine of its first 34 shots (26%) before connecting of 13 of the final 16 attempts (81%). Much like at UIC, the Bulldogs did not let their offense dictate their defense, keeping the Phoenix from building a big lead in the first half. Butler did a better job of attacking Green Bay's defense in the second half and finding open looks, and the shots finally started dropping. As a result, the Bulldogs are now 17-1 on the season, a record which no other Butler team has attained or surpassed after 18 games.

Butler continues its three-game homestand against the Milwaukee Panthers. Game time is Saturday, January 24, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
