MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs broke a seven-game losing streak to Xavier in defeating the #14 Musketeers 74-65 at the Cintas Center. Butler used an 8-0 run to build an early 8-2 lead. Xavier battled back and eventually took a 26-24 lead on a three-pointer by Brad Redford. Ronald Nored answered with a three of his own, and the Bulldogs would not trail again. A Shawn Vanzant jumper with just under a minute to play gave Butler a 29-26 halftime lead. The Musketeers tied the game at 32 with 17:56 to go but could not take the lead. Xavier seemed poised to regain the lead on several occasions, but the Bulldogs hit several key jumpers to extend their advantage and went 15-of-16 from the foul line over the final 5:15 to seal the 74-65 victory.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Matt Howard and Gordon Hayward. Matt finished with a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds, including nine offensive boards. He also got to the foul line 13 times, connecting on nine. Hayward also had a double-double, with 19 points and 10 rebounds to go with three steals and four blocks.

Willie Veasley connected on four three-pointers for 12 points. Nored added 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Shelvin Mack had seven points, three rebounds, and three assists. Grant Leiendecker added three points. Vanzant finished with two points and four steals, while Garrett Butcher had two points and three rebounds. Xavier was led by Derrick Brown's 17 points.

Butler's defense came up big, forcing 17 turnovers--11 via steals--en route to 24-5 advantage in points off turnovers. Offensively, the Bulldogs turned the tables on the Musketeers. Xavier was averaging over 33 free throw attempts coming into the game, but the Bulldogs attacked the Musketeers' pressure defense to the tune of a 33-22 advantage in foul shots. After starting 2-of-7 at the charity stripe, Butler finished 24-of-26. The Bulldogs also held their own on the glass, with Xavier holding just a 40-38 rebounding advantage. A huge victory for a young Butler team looking for a statement win.

Butler returns home for one more non-conference game before Horizon League play begins in earnest when Mike Davis brings Pike HS grad Robert Vaden and the UAB Blazers to Hinkle Fieldhouse. Game time is Tuesday, December 30, at 7:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
