MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS
The Butler Bulldogs clinched a share of the Horizon League regular season title, defeating the Youngstown State Penguins 78-57 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler never trailed in the game, scoring the game's first four points. 4-3 was as close as YSU would get the rest of the way. Willie Veasley's three gave Butler a four-point lead, and the Bulldogs' advantage fluctuated between three and 11 for the rest of the period, with Butler holding a 38-28 halftime lead. The Penguins scored four unanswered points to start the second half, then an 8-0 Bulldog run put the hosts in control. Butler's biggest lead came at 76-52 with 1:54 left before YSU scored five of the game's final seven points to make the final score 78-57.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Matt Howard. The sophomore continued his strong play of late, finishing with a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds.
Gordon Hayward had 14 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Veasley added 12 points and eight rebounds. Garrett Butcher finished with eight points and three rebounds off the bench, while fellow reserve Shawn Vanzant added seven points. Shelvin Mack had six points, six assists, and three rebounds. Ronald Nored added four points, five assists, and four rebounds. Zach Hahn finished with two points. Avery Jukes did not score but played four minutes in his first action after missing four straight games with a knee injury. YSU was led by Sirlester Martin's 15 points and six rebounds.
The stat sheet pretty much says it all. Butler shot 55% while holding YSU to 36%, outrebounded the Penguins 40-25, and dished out 17 assists against 11 turnovers.
Butler wraps up the regular season against the Cleveland State Vikings. A win would give the Bulldogs the HL regular season title outright and hosting rights for the league tournament.
