PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mack. The freshman had a tremendous first half, scoring 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 4-of-5 from long range. He finished with 22 points and five assists, both career highs.
Howard led the Buldogs with 23 points and nine rebounds along with three assists. Zach Hahn added nine points off the bench. Gordon Hayward had seven points and three rebounds. Ronald Nored finished with six points and three rebounds. Avery Jukes added five points and three rebounds. Reserves Shawn Vanzant and Grant Leiendecker finished with three and two points, respectively. Willie Veasley had two points, three rebounds, and three steals. YSU's Kelvin Bright led all scorers with 27 points.
It was clear from the start that this game would be nowhere near the defensive battle that Thursday's game at Cleveland State was. Both teams shot the ball well. The big difference was that Butler forced 14 YSU turnovers while committing just four in the opening frame, leading to a 21-3 advantage in points off turnovers at halftime. That gave the Bulldogs the lead and enough of a cushion to withstand the Penguins' second half surge and still come away with the victory.
The Bulldogs return to non-league play with a trip to Peoria, IL, to face the Bradley Braves. Game time is Wednesday, December 10, at 8:05 p.m. EST.
