The idea for 1998 was this.....The Wind Climber workshops that happen every winter seem to be the most often event asked about. New members always show great interest in them. This winter we are going to change the format. In the past there were 4, week-day sessions. This year we are going to have just one session but hold it on a Saturday. The advantages of this arrangement are that we can all bring our sewing machines and finish a project (that is our hope) by the end of the day. There will be less set-up time required. The out of town kiters will also be able to make it. A break in the middle will allow us time to go out to lunch at a local restaurant. This seem to be the most important activity for some of us! We selected a banner as the common project. It is not too difficult and there should be enough time for us to complete it in the one day.(even with lunch in the middle)It would be great if we had a good turn-out. Mark Saturday Feb 21/98 on the calendar. I hope to see you there. - Ed Hummel Pictured from left to right are Kerry St. Dennis Ed Hummel And Karen Reid. |
This is what happened.....Those of us that made it out to Kitchener truly enjoyed the day. Once the group all trickled in we began to discuss the steps to complete our banners in one day. We all decided to create a production line just like in the days of the model T Ford. See Bruce Reinhart on the right making sparks? What kind of banner workshop is this? The spikes(ground anchors) had to be Grinded to fit into a special pvc tube. We actually made a quick release ground anchoring system. |

Every one helps.....Daryl Erwin(on the right) mixes up some epoxy while Jack Knight(to Daryl's left) attaches rubber tubing to a 4 foot fibreglass rod. The next step was to glue the pvc onto the rubber tubing. We received some help from a couple of "very strong" individuals Alison Smith and Kerry St. Dennis along with a few others helped finish up the banner poles. |
Finally, some sewing.....Once the anchoring system was all set up we turned our concentration to the banner itself. We decided on having both our club logos available for the class. Our good friend, Eric Curtis of Boreal Kites silk screened the logos for us from his home base in Sparta Ontario. Of course everyone wanted to make both Wind Climber and Toronto Kite Flier banners. Most of decided that we would have to make more than one. Four banners was the right number for most of us. Over 30 banners were made at our workshop. What a great way to promote our kite clubs! -Carlos Simoes |
