All his life Jonathan Crane had been pushed around by bullies. When he grew up, he became a professor of psychology at Gotham State University. There he developed an abnormal interest in the effect fear has on people. He was fired from his job when his experiments to create fear in his students and patients became too dangerous. Losing his job as a professor was the last straw for him. He turned into his alter ego, the Scarecrow to get even with all the bullies he had known all his life. He delights in finding ways to scare people as much as possible.
