The Tree's Secret

The tree had a secret. It was really a house. One raccoon lived at the top. He lived in a hole in the tree. Two cardinals lived below the raccoon. They roosted on a small branch. Three squirrels lived below the cardinals. They lived on a strong nest of leaves and sticks. Four mice lived below the squirrels. They lived on the ground among the dead leaves. Five rabbits lived below the mice. They lived under the long roots. The tree was not just a house. The tree was an apartment house.

No Time To Eat

The fat little bear ran fast a tree full of bees. "Eat some honey," said the bees. "I don't have time to est honey," said the fat liitle bear. The fat little bear ran past a stream. "Catch some fish," said the stream. "I don't have time to catch fish," said the fat little bear. The fat little bear ran past some bushes. "Pick some berries," said the bushes. I don't have time to pick berries." said the fat liitle bear. The fat little bear ran into his den. "You are just in time," said Mama Bear. "Your just in time for your winter nap." The fat little bear curled up beside Mama Bear. All winter long he dreamed about eating honey, catching fish, and picking berries.

Three Acorns

Squirrel and Chipmunk were sitting beneath a big tree. An acorn fell from the tree into the tall grass. Squirrel scampered across the grass. "It is time to gather nuts for the winter," he said. "I will take this acorn to my hole up in the tree. Another acorn fell from the tree. Chipmunk scampered across the grass. "That is a good idea," he said. "I will take this acorn to my hole in the hollow log." One more acorn fell from the tree. "Let's leave that acorn where it is," said squirrel. Chipmunk agreed. "one acorn for you, one acorn for me, and one on the ground to grow a new tree!"

Sam's Coloring Book

In his coloring book, Sam saw six birds, one squirrel, one rabbit and one dog. The birds were flying away. The squirrel was climbing a tree. And the dog was chasing the rabbit across the snow. Sam colored one bird yellow, two birds blue, and three birds red. He colored the squirrel gray. Then he colored the dog brown and the rabbit white. He colored the snow white, too. "Now the dog can't see the rabbit," said Sam. "The rabbit is safe in the snow.

Ma Ma Hu Hu
Ali Wong is sad. His pet white mouse has died. His friend Ding Li stops by to play. "How are you today, Ali? he ask in Chinese. Ali shrugs and says, "Ma ma hu hu." In Chinese, that means "not too good and not too bad. Ding says, "let's visit the animals at the pet store." "OK," says Ali. Off they go. "What do you think of this kitten?" ask Ding. Ali looks at the kitten. He shrugs and says, "Ma ma hu hu." "Well, how about these fine fish?" ask Ding. Ali looks at the fish and shrugs. "Ma ma hu hu." "How do you like this white mouse?" ask Ding. Ali looks at the mouse. "Ma ma hu hu," he finally says. A parrot ruffles its feathers. "How are you pretty parrot?" ask Ding. "Ma ma hu hu," warbles the parrot. Ali laughs. "That is a fine pet for me!" he says.

Music in a Box

One day, Caleb helped Dad clean out the garage. He found a small box of junk. "May I have this box?" asked Caleb. "What is in the box?" Dad asked. "Music!" said Caleb. Dad looked into the box. He did not see any music. He saw three nails, 2 keys, and 1 old fork. "How will you get music from all these things?" asked Dad. Caleb got a hanger and some string. He tied the 3 nails, 2 keys and 1 old fork to the hanger. Then he hung it all outside. DING! CLANG! PING! Everything on the hanger bumped together in the wind. "You were right!" said Dad. "There was music in that box!".

The Fox and the Crane

Fox invited Crane to his house for dinner. He served soup in a shallow bowl. "Help yourself, Crane," he said. Crane put her bill into the bowl. She could not eat. The bowl was too shallow. Fox had tricked her! Grinning slyly, Fox licked both bowls clean. The next day, Crane invited Fox to her house. for dinner. She served soup in a narrow har. "Help yourself, Fox," said she. When Fox tried to eat, his mouth would not fit into the jar. He whined pitifully. Crane said, "If you are going to play tricks, Fox, be able to take a trick yourself." And she ate all the soup.

Did You See a Black Cat?

Raindrops pattered on Abby's umbrella. "Did you see a black cat?" Abby asked the mail carrier. "No," said the mail carrier. Abby hurried on, splashing through the puddle. "Did you see a black cat?" Abby asked a girl delivering newspapers. "No," the girl answered. Abby splashed through three more puddles. "Did you see black cat?" Abby asked the crossing guard. "No," said the crossing guard. Abby ran home and kicked off her wet sandals. She went to the linen closet. She reached for a towel to dry her feet. The towel felt furry. "Meow," it said. Abby luaghed. "Silly cat", she said. "You were safe and dry the whole time."

Father's Sundae

Cubby woke up Papa. "happy Father's Day," he yelled. "Thank you," said Papa. "What can I do for you today?" asked Cubby. "You can help me wash the car," said Papa. Cubby filled the bucket with water from the hose. Papa added some soap. In between squirting each other with the hose, they got the car washed. "Now what can we do?" Cubby asked. "We can mow the grass," said Papa. Papa pushed the lawn mower. Cubby followed with the rake. When they finished, Cubby asked, "What else can I do?" "You can make me a giant sundae," Papa answered. Cubby made Papa a giant sundae. He placed it on the table next to a spoon. "Can I do anything else to make your Father's Day perfect?" Cubby asked. "Yes!" said Papa. "You can get another spoon and join me."

If It Doesn't Rain

Leah looked out the window at the dark gray clouds. "Pilar wants to come over. May we play in my tree house?" she asked her mom. "If it doesn't rain," Mom said. "May we take some apples to eat in the tree house?" "If it doesn't rain," Mom said. "Pilar is bringing her new skates," said Leah. "May we skate all around the block?" She looked at Mom. "If it doesn't rain," Leah said. The dark gray clouds got darker. Leah called Pilar on the telephone. Then Leah said, "I told Pilar to wear her raincoat and boots so we can play in the puddles." Mom laughed. "If it does rain," she said.

Are They Carrots Yet

"Help me grow some carrots," said rabbit. "All right. But how do you grow carrots?" asked Duck and Frog. "You plant seeds," said Rabbit. "Then you water the seeds everyday. After the seeds grow, you pull up the carrots." "Where will we get seeds?" asked Duck. "Look!" said Frog. "These flowers have seeds. Let's use them." Duck, Rabbit, and Frog picked seeds from the flowers by the pond. They planted and watered the seeds. The seeds grew and grew. "Are they carrots yet?" asked Duck and Frog. "Not yet," said Rabbit. "They are flowers just like the ones by the pond." "They must need more water, said Duck and Frog. "Yes," said Rabbit. "Maybe they be carrots tomorrow." But they never were.

Ready for Work

The sun woke Jeriah. "Today I am going to build a special house." he said.. "You will need your overalls and your work boots," said Mother. "You will need boards and nails and a saw and a hammer to build a house." Jeriah smiled as he got out of bed. "I will not need boards or nails or a saw or a hammer," he said. Jeriah put on his bathing suit. "I do not need my overalls or my work boots. I do not need any shoes at all," he said, wiggling his toes. After breakfast, Jeriah took an old spoon and a pail of water to his sandbox. Jeriah dug with the spoon. He dribbled some water from the pail on the sand so he could shape it. At Last he was finished. "You are right," said Mother. "A castle is a very special house!"
