CHAPTER ONE

Emily screamed as she saw that two blood red eyes were staring right into hers. The muscular head moved back and forth ready to strike at any moment. She screamed as the serpent moved in a fast yet steady pace. She braced herself for the pain she was about to feel. The serpent's tongue flickered.
"Good thing that thing is behind glass or we would be in real trouble!" said her best friend, Jake.
"Come on. You know that I hate reptiles, now let's get out of here!" Their footsteps echoed in the tiny roomful of hideous reptiles and insects. The door creaked and groaned as they left. The air outside smelled clean and fresh after being in that little stuffy room.
"Hey, what do you say that we go back to my house and have some popsicles again?"
"Sure...I love those things!" What they didn't know was that they were being followed.

CHAPTER TWO

They walked down the narrow road to Jake's house until Emily noticed footsteps coming from behind them. She spun around expecting to see somebody, but she only saw the slowly swaying trees blowing back and forth in the wind, and the long narrow dirt road they were walking down. Emily shrugged as she turned back around. A small breeze swept through the woods. Emily made her nose crooked after she took a big whiff of the so called fresh air.
"What is that horrible smell?" said Jake, putting his nose under his shirt.
"I don't know, but it sure smells nasty!" Emily protested.
"Yeah, I wonder what went and died around here."
"Hey," said Emily. "It kind of smells like the reptiles and amphibians exhibit at the zoo."
"Yeah, you're right. It does!" said Jake.
"Yes, I know that I'm right. What else could you expect from smart little old me? Huh?"
"Oh, you're just a riot," said Jake both kidding and sarcastic. "Wait," said Jake. "What was that?"
"Do you mean me?" a strange man said, coming out of the bushes wearing a policeman's uniform.
Emily just about had a heart attack. "Who are you?" she stammered.
"My name is Officer Smith. I'm sorry I've startled you, but I tried to talk to you before you left the zoo, but I couldn't catch you."
"Well, then why were you hiding in the bushes?" asked Jake suspiciously.
"Well, I didn't want to startle you when one of you turned around and saw that a policeman was running after you, but I guess I startled you anyway, didn't I?"
          "You sure did!" Jake replied.
"Well, anyway, I have to ask you a few questions, Okay?"
          "Shoot," said Jake.
"Did you see anything strange while you sere at the zoo?'
"No, not one strange thing at all. Why? What happened?" asked Emily.
"Well, I know this may sound a little bit strange, but someone stole all of the reptiles and amphibians from the exhibit!" The wind started howling, then Officer Smith told Jake and Emily that he had to leave.
"See ya later alligator!" Jake said, not realizing how close he was to the truth!

CHAPTER THREE

They walked down the narrow dirt road and they began to hear the faint sound of cars and bike horns, that meant that it was not too far from Jake's house. They stood on the curb until the light changed to red and then crossed the street. Jake was just staring at the ground wondering why someone would break into the zoo and steal all of the reptiles and amphibians from the exhibit. All of a sudden, Jake saw a small chameleon scampering toward his shoe. "Cool!" he said picking up the creature. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a ziplock bag with a few holes in it and carefully put in the fascinating creature. He zipped the bag closed and held it in his hand in a particular way so Emily wouldn't see it and freak.
"Hey," said Emily. "When we get to your house, what do you say that we eat our popsicles and then go to the old science lab and ask Professor Iguana to take us on a short tour of the science lab and ask if we can take home some of their old science equipment to keep?"
"Yeah, remember when Professor Thinkwell let us have that old microscope that they didn't need anymore?"
"Yeah, but do you think that Professor Iguana is as nice as Professor Thinkwell? I mean, do you really think that he'll let us take home some of their old stuff like Professor Thinkwell did?"
"Well, I can't be too sure that he will, but he might," said Jake secretly petting his chameleon. The light changed to green; Jake and Emily walked across the street. "Only about four more blocks and we're there." Jake said patiently.
"Wonder why that whenever we go on the tour they never really let us look around the actual science lab," said Emily.
"I don't know but there's one thing I do know."
"And what would that be?" asked Emily.
"I know that I'm really hungry!" he answered her.
"So am I," she announced. They peered down the corner at Jake's house and started up the pebbly driveway. They made it up to the front door. Emily thought that the door was beautiful, it had a huge carved rose engraved into it. It had a beautiful 12 by 24 piece of glass that had a rose engraved into it except this one was much more beautiful. Then the door knob was made of brass and had a nice polished shine to it. All of this was on a beautiful mahogany door.
They turned the knob and went inside. "Hey, what flavor do you want?" asked Jake.
I'll take cherry; you know that that's my favorite kind," Emily said. Jake threw her the one that Emily wanted and she made the catch. Jake grabbed a grape flavored popsicle and hurried out the door. Soon Emily joined him and they both ran to the science lab. Five minutes later they reached it.

They opened the squeaky doorway and walked down the hall to the main lobby and their footsteps echoed down the outstretched hallway. Jake examined the art hanging on the walls. "Hey, look at that one, it's new," said Jake his voice echoing down the hall.
"It's cool and all but I'd like to take the tour if you don't mind."
"Ok, ok I'm coming," Jake said. Soon they finally reached the lobby. It was kind of like a hospital. It had a pharmacy right next to the doors that opened up to the next hallway. Jake and Emily went through the door and went down the next hallway until they came to a door that read: SCIENCE LAB. They knocked on the door and waited. They saw the small knob start to turn. A short baldheaded man answered the door. Jake looked down at the man's name tag. "Oh, so you're Prof. Iguana!" The small man just looked at Jake's hand. Jake could have sworn that he heard the chameleon say: "Hi, Boss."

CHAPTER FOUR

Prof. Iguana motioned for them to come in. They walked in as they were told. "Why did you come here, do you know Prof. Thinkwell?"
"Yes," said Emily, "and we came for the tour."
"Oh, he told me about you two; you must be Jake and Emily!"
          "That's us!" said Jake.
"Well then, what are you waiting for? Let's go!" Just as usual they took the same old tour. Jake started to pat his chameleon but then noticed that it wasn't there. He looked at the bag and saw that there was a big hole in the side of it. He got real mad and squeezed the bag and then tore it up into shreds and threw them on the ground. Just then, Prof. Iguana went into his office. When he came out, he was holding a magnifying glass. "Prof. Thinkwell told me to give this to Emily." He handed her the magnifying glass.
"WOW, this thing is powerful!" She identified as she looked at her hand with it.
Jake noticed a chameleon half slithering and half walking down the hall. Jake didn't even hesitate, he took off after it. The chamaeleon went around the corner and so did Jake, until he ran into Prof. Thinkwell. "Hi, Prof. Have you seen a little chameleon running around?"
"No, I haven't, but how are you doing?"
          "Great!"
"That's good, well, I have to get going. Bye!"
"Bye," said Jake. Prof. Thinkwell went into Prof. Iguana's office.
"I think that it's time to go, Jake," said Emily. Soon they made their way out the door.

"Ok, boss, Where's the weapon?" chameleon asked.
"It's right here on the desk." Prof. Iguana picked up the magnifying glass.chameleon asked           "Now what is this thing s'posed to do again?"
"You see, this is made to look a plain old magnifying glass, but when you tap it," he said opening a drawer and taking out two gas masks. As soon as they put them on, he finished, "it lets off a gas that if you inhale it and you're not already an anphibitron or reptilatron you soon will be."
"But boss, what happens if you are already are one?"
"Then you will return to your human form," he answered. "Oh no, this is the wrong one, I must have given Emily the weapon!" Then chameleon's head popped off and then shot through the air like a rocket. Then his clothes started changing color and shape. Then his hands, feet, arms, and legs started changing color, muscular shape, and texture. Then Prof. Iguana said, "You know what to do."
