The following story is related by his daughter, Gracie. He worked for the railroad as a fireman shoveling coal into the firebox of the steam locomotives. While working one day he was on a train engine shoveling coal as usual. Train was rolling along through Fairview Heights in Lynchburg started through a tunnel. As he was shoveling coal into the firebox, the engineer hit the brakes on the train to hard causing Ellis to lose his balance and fall head first into the fire box setting his hair on fire. He jumped back and stuck his head out of the window of the engine cab, striking his head on the wall of the tunnel which caused his death. His wife received only $7,000 in compensation for his death because as she was told, "He was an extra man on the train that day."
