William was suppose to have at one time worked on a Mississippi River boat. This was related by his grandaughter, Hettie Salmon Ware.

The following information was retrived from the Archives in Washington, D.C. Enlisted in the Confederate Army during the War Between the States. He was mustered in with the 13th Battalion, Virginia Light Artillary on 15 February 1862 in Danville, Virginia and was made a private. He was enlisted by a Captain Stamps.

Muster rolls for November and December 1864, dated 31 December 1864 state, "Absent on 15 days furlough". Muster rolls for January and February 1865 state, "Deserted 5 February 1865 while on a furlough of indulgence".

The story is told by his son, Waddie, that during the War he was so hungry that once he found a piece of bread alongside the road in the dirt. He picked it up and ate it, saying it was the best bread he'd ever ate.

In the census of 1880 and 1890, it is found that he lived in the Liberty Magistrate District of Bedford County, Virginia with his family and his occupation is listed as a laborer. Neither he nor his wife could read or write according to the census.

At the time of his death it is said by his grandchildren that they were at his cabin just off Leesville Road in Campbell County, Virginia sitting on the front porch, when he jumped up from his rocking chair, clutched his chest and fell to the porch dead.
