WILLIAMSON BURNETT

About age 18 to 20, he left to join in the Revolutionary War and served three tours of three months each in the militia. On 11 January 1781, his company marched from Cumberland County, Virginia through the counties of Cumberland, Powatan, Chesterfield and through the town of Petersburg, Virginia to Cabin Point where they joined with their headquarters company.

His field officers were General Muhlenburg, Col. Charles Flemming and Major Bins Jones. While assigned to this company he served as a bowman to subaltern officers of the company under the command of Captain Flemming. He was discharged in April of the same year.

After the war he married Pricilla Carter, daughter of Joseph Carter of Buckingham County, Virginia. They had two children while living in Buckingham, James Hooper (named after Williamson's father and mother) and Nancy.

Sometime later, about 1798-1799, he sold his 150 acres either above or below Bent Creek to a Samuel Coleman, joining Richard Phelp's land. They moved to Bedford, Virginia and had another son, William.

The first time Williamson is shown on the Buckingham Tax List is 1784, age 21. He was there with his father James and his Burnett cousins. The last time his name is shown is 1798 when they probly moved or early 1799 to Bedford County. From the records of his father, James was in and out of Bedford County also while living in Buckingham County.

Williamson purchased 250 acres of land on Staunton River on 22 July 1799 and 300 acres in 1801. In 1803, he bought 95 1/2 acres and 1819 he gave this land to his son James in a Deed of Gift.

When Williamson's father died in Smith County, Tenneessee, he bequeathed to Williamson, the sum of $40.00.

It is found in, "The Virginia Revolutionary Pension Applications", Volume 13, "Williamson was an invalid for many years and couldn't walk a step". It also states, "He died at the home of his son on 03 June 1833.

His last Will and Testament is recorded at the Bedford County Courthouse in Bedford, Virginia, dated 06 July 1824. His will is signed with an "X".

Pricilla was living at Davis Mill in Bedford County when she applied for a widows pension due to Williamson's service in the war.

He is buried at the Staunton River Baptist Church on Route 626 near Smith Mountain Lake in Bedford County, Virginia. This cemetery was established in 1790 and was origionally called "Moodys Old Meeting House".

His headstone is hand carved into field stone and in good condition! On the stone is carved, "Williamson Burnett died 3 June 1833, aged 72 years.
