My Journal--Fourth Month (Three Months Old)

Calvin loves his sling.
March 25, 1999

I've got a headache. My left breast is sore. The soreness started yesterday and got worse as the day went by. Then last night a couple hours after I went to bed I woke up *really* cold. I was shaking and my teeth were chattering. I tried to stop shaking, and I couldn't.

I finally laid beside my husband, and he held me and rubbed my back. I started getting warmer and the shaking slowed down. Then I went back and laid next to Calvin because I heard him let our a cry.

I put another blanket over us, and John turned the heat up. Then I nursed Calvin. I finally started feeling warmer. Before John left for work, he brought me a glass of water. My mouth was sooo dry.

When I was shaking I must've used muscles I wasn't used to using so much, because when I got out of bed my body felt so heavy. I'm a little achy today.

Saturday night

Calvin is doing great. Last Friday he was weighed at the WIC clinic. He weighed 16 1/2 pounds and was 26 3/8 inches long.

He still has a white spot on his gum, but it doesn't seem to be getting any bigger. I guess the tooth might not pop through for a while yet. We got some teething beeds last Saturday. He kinda likes them a little bit--he's able to hold them and bring them to his mouth a little, but I don't think he quite understands what they are for.

Thursday at the La Leche League meeting, he kept on making rasberries... I think that's what it's called when they makes sounds by blowing on their lips and tongue. Anyway, it was really cute. He was also doing it a lot today.

We got a new carseat for him since he was getting close to being too long for his infat carseat. It's, of course, still facing backward, but he'll have more room for his feet and stuff. He seems to really like it. We got one that fits rear-facing until 30 pounds.

I don't miss not being able to take the car seat out; I didn't like to carry him in it before anyway--too heavy, plus, more importantly, babies need contact with mommy as opposed to contact with hard plastic). When we get out of the car I put him in the sling and carry him inside (or wherever we're going).

Calvin at almost four months oldWe also got a boppy pillow. He likes it as long as I don't keep him in it too long. It's great for when he wants to play with and bat at his toys that dangle above him.

He hasn't rolled over yet except for once when he was sleeping next to John on the bed... I think the indentation in the bed must've been enough to help him roll over. That kind of worried me a little when I went in and found Calvin on his tummy. He usually sleeps on his back or on his side.

He can roll on his side, though. Since he often nurses on his side while lying down in bed with me, sometimes if he wants to nurse, when I lay him down he'll turn on his side and start sucking/chewing on his fist.

Speaking of John and Calvin sleeping together. . . they don't often sleep alone together. They've done it about twice. I don't like to have Calvin away from me that long. He usually sleeps in the carseat on the floor beside me while I work on the computer at night. Then I bring him to bed with me when I'm ready to go to sleep.

Sometimes he wakes up while I am on the computer at night, and then I pick him up and nurse him back to sleep. Usually, though, he sleeps until I am ready to change his diaper before we go to bed. Sometimes he even sleeps through that. If he wakes up, he nurses right back to sleep after we get in bed.

I'm not sure, but I guess Calvin may have had a little growth spurt last week. I kept waiting for him to go throw his 3 month growth spurt and nurse a lot, but he didn't. Last week for at least a day, he nursed a little more than normal. Sometimes it's kinda hard to tell if he's nursing more or less than normal, though, because I don't keep track of when we nurse.
