Why Do You Nurse A Toddler???
My daughter Jessica is now 15 months old, and I am still breastfeeding. I have two other children, but did not breastfeed them; I guess I didn't know the goodness of it, cause now I wish I had. I don't really know what made me decide to breastfeed Jessica, cause no one ever really talked to me about
it. Just as soon as I found out I was pregnant, I said I was going to breastfeed, and boy am I glad I did. Jessica now weighs 25-27pds, and is 31 inches (very healthy). I used to think I would stop breastfeeding by age 2, but the more I do it the more I love it, and so does she, so I guess I will just let her decide when to stop, although I have to admit I do not look forward to that day. I guess she nurses about 4-5 times a day, and before bed, sometimes once in the middle of the night, but not for long, I think it is a comfort thing, but I don't mind. I know a lot of people don't understand breastfeeding this long, but the way I see it, they aren't doing it, so why should it bother them. I think any woman who breastfeeds should do it as
long as they and their child want to.
When my daughter, Breanne was first born my goal was NO FORMULA! Even though I was
returning to work in six short weeks. I wanted to be able to supply her with her best source of nutrition for one year. She will be 3 soon and we still nurse on a very regular cycle. If we are not out and on the go, she will sit on the couch and request (ok demand) to have "nummies." She still nurses to sleep and wakes up to switch sides in our family bed at night.
I sometimes wonder if I should be doing something to promote her "weaning" process--but I guess I am not really not ready to enter that chapter in our lives. My husband sometimes pushes the issue, but then he also seems to be content with our situation. (he also has mixed feelings)
She has never been to the doctor for anything accept well baby check ups and if she does start
to feel under-the-weather I know that with her "nummies" she will be in tip top shape in no time.
My goal was one year--now I think maybe 4.
