Annie, Someone You Should Know
Annie Coleman has been a volunteer and good friend of the shelter's and ours, for many years. Through the years Annie has done a great deal for the shelter, but for the most part we haven't told you about it because Annie wanted to remain anonymous.
Upon meeting Annie, you can't help but notice her cheerful, energetic nature; there isn't a hint of any of the tragedies that have befallen her, even though her life has not always been a bed of roses. Instead of letting these things get her down, each tragedy seemed to fuel Annie's need to help others. Annie gets her pleasure from making others happy. Annie goes out of her way to help those in need - as her friends can attest to, she is never too busy to lend a helping hand. Not only does Annie volunteer at the shelter, she also helps at the local safety village teaching children how to react in different types of crisis situations. She also takes time to visit an area nursing home with Baby (whom she adopted from T.L.C.) to bring the seniors a little cheer. Nor does Annie mind getting her hands dirty helping the garden club with its beautification project.
The NSFRE (National Society of Fund Raising Executives ) contacted T.L.C. along with other non-profit organizations in the northern Illinois-southern Wisconsin area, requesting information and nominations for its 13th annual Outstanding Community Service Volunteer Award. Naturally we thought who would be more befitting of receiving that award, than our own Annie. Although Annie did not receive the award (and between you and me, I don't know how the committee slipped up there, unless the party that won walks on water) her name will be mentioned at the NSFRE luncheon November 18th which is being held at Giovannis in Rockford.
Annie, we just wanted you to know that you are #1 with us and you always will be! Thank you for all you have done.
P.S.
Thanks to Alice Chin, Rosalie Ducato, P.J. Fitzgerald and Donna Houlis for taking the time to write nomination letters on Annie's behalf.

Helping Your Pet Make it Through the Holidays
If you think the holiday season has you stressed out, did you ever stop to think that your pet may be stressed out too? Has your pet been acting a little differently lately?
For example, when you got home from work, were you met with an accident on the floor? Before you scold, stop... could it be that you took longer to get home from work, because you did some holiday shopping? You know yourself, when you gotta go, you gotta go, it's not your pet's fault you came home a couple of hours later than usual. He tried his best to hold it...
Has your pet become a little more protective, apprehensive, or prone to hiding, since friends and family have been stopping by? Are there more kids running noisily through your home, driving your pet crazy? Even though your pet is very much a part of the family, having a half dozen kids hanging on him, grabbing at him, and taking his toys is a little too much to expect even the best natured pet to put up with. Instead, give your pet a quiet place in the house where he won't be disturbed.
Make sure your pet is safely put up when postal and delivery people come to the door - many accidental bites happen this way, when an animal thinks he is defending his home. Also a wide open door spells trouble, a major cause of many lost pets. Protect your pet, and save yourself a lot of grief, by keeping him safe inside the house.
Maybe you think you're doing your pet a favor by sharing the holiday meal with him - don't. Remember how much your stomach complained the last time you overindulged during the holidays? A change in diet can bring about vomiting, diarrhea, and unwelcome gas for your pet. Unfortunately your pet can't tell you he needs tums or pepto bismol.
And most importantly, take time out to be with your pet. Whether you take your pet for a walk, or just sit there petting him, it's not only a great stress reliever for your pet, it will help relieve some of your stress too!
Thanks Becky!
We mentioned to Becky Demeo that we wish we could send a token of our appreciation to all our contributors this holiday season. Becky came up with the perfect solution, bookmarks. She fashioned them after the billboard she had designed for the shelter.
To all our contributors, please accept this gift as our way of saying thanks for all you have done. Becky, thanks again.
