Shelter Life from Shorty's Point of View

Hummph!
Falling leaves, chilly air, less sunlight, all signs that fall is here and winter is coming. bah humbug!
"Shorty, what are you doing, all curled up in your blanket? You can't fool me, you're not sleeping, I see one eye peeking out from the corner of the blanket! You know we are waiting on your column. And while your at it do you mind telling me what you are doing with that pile of canned cat food?"
How can I write when I feel Blah? I figured if I cured up with my blanket and had a little comfort food, everything would be just fine.
"Comfort food? That looks like you were stockpiling for Y2K!"
That is not funny. Here I am suffering from sunlight deprivation, and you stand there joking about it.
"No problem Shorty, we can fix that. We will be back in a little while."
Good, alone at last, now I can get a little shut-eye. All I have to do is rearrange my blankets, fluff my pillow... ahhhhh purrrrrrrfect! Now to settle down for a nap..... ZzzzzzZzzzzzZzzzzz.......
Hey! Hey! What are you doing? Turn off those lights! What's all that noise? How's a guy supposed to get any sleep around here?

"We thought we were doing you a favor Shorty, by turning on all the lights, and bringing in the big spotlight, thinking it might help your light deprivation. As for the music, we thought it would help you wake up."
Favor? I nearly jumped through the roof! You don't wake someone from a sound sleep with 10,000 watts of light and John Philip Suza blasting in your ear! Humph! Now if you don't mind, let me peel myself off the ceiling, and then I am going to try and get some rest! UGH!
"Sorry Shorty, guess that wasn't very nice, but we are facing a deadline with the newsletter. Well it looks like we will just have to have someone else take over Shorty's column this time. We have to make sure everyone is informed about the craft show in time, so we can count on plenty of handmade crafts and bakery to sell.. oh no, me and my big mouth! I didn't want Shorty to know until the last possible minute. The mess he made trying to help was unbelievable!"
Boy, if anything gets me back on track, it is the thought of yummy bakery made by the loving hands of T.L.C. volunteers and contributors. Why didn't you say that in the first place? Looks like I will have to get my column done pronto, so I can start on some craft projects!
"UGH! I don't know which is harder, keeping you out of the bakery or keeping your paws out of the craft supplies!"
Don't worry guys, I will come up with some really neat stuff before the 13th of November, and just think I will have almost an entire month to clean my mess up before the open house!
"He needs a month to clean up! Oh no! I feel a tremendous headache coming on! as the old adage goes, it is best to leave sleeping dogs lie, and I might add that goes for cats, too!"
Well I hate to cut this short, but gotta run, I need to get some paint, glitter, glue, clay, etc., and a large bottle of aspirin for my people friends, although I don't know why.
Love, Shorty
P.S.
As usual, I will gladly avail myself to taste testing goodies for the bake sale. Its a tough job but somebody's gotta do it.
"SHORTY!"
Uhoh, gotta run!

Where Do Pets Come From?
This was sent to us by Barbara Cano for you to enjoy.
It is reported that the following edition of the Book of Genesis was discovered in the Dead Sea Scrolls. If authentic, it would shed light on the question, "Where do pets come from?"
And Adam said, "Lord, when I was in the garden you walked with me every day. Now I do not see you any more. I am lonesome here and it is difficult for me to remember how much you love me."
And God said, "No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will know I love you, even when you cannot see me.
Regardless of how selfish and unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourself."
And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam, and it was a good animal and Adam was pleased.
And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and wagged his tail. And Adam said, "But Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and all the good ones are taken and I cannot think of a name for this new animal."
And God said, "No problem! Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG."
And Dog lived with Adam and was a companion to him and loved him. And Adam was comforted, and God was pleased, and Dog was content and wagged his tail.
After a while, it came to pass that Adam's guardian angel came to the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam has been filled with pride. He struts and preens like a peacock, and he believes he is worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught him that he is loved, but no one has taught him humility."
and the Lord said, "No problem! I will create for him a companion who will be with him forever and will see him as he is. The companion will remind him of his limitations, so he will know that he is not always worthy of adoration."
And God created CAT to be a companion for Adam. And Cat would not obey Adam. And when Adam gazed into Cat's eyes, he was reminded that he was not the supreme being. And Adam learned humility.

Can You Turn Your Back on This Face?
We may still have a few warm days left before those cold winds start to blow, but don't wait till those temperatures start dropping before you do something about that stray cat or dog that has been in your area for awhile.
Yes, I did say you. Why, you might ask? The reason being is, if no one has done anything about the poor animal by now, you can bet your bottom dollar they aren't going to, and it will be you watching this poor animal trying to survive this winter. It will be you trudging out in the cold and snow with some food for the poor animal. And those blustery nights when you hear the wind howling and those wind chills dip well below zero, it will be you losing sleep worrying about the poor stray freezing to death.
And don't say "Oh no, not me!" I know you better than that, and if that was how you felt you would not be reading this right now! So do yourself a favor and the animal too, whether you bring the animal to T.L.C. or a shelter closer to where you live, please get that animal out of the elements and somewhere he can get the care needed. You will sleep better if you do... Sweet Dreams

Pet Food Drive
A Special Thanks to All Pets Hospital in Lockport for holding a pet food drive for the shelter! Our friends at All Pets Hospital made up a list of things the shelter could use including cash donations, and put up drop off boxes at area stores. We appreciate all the effort they put into it and also want to thank those who donated food, pet supplies, and monetary contributions.

Phyllis' Impromptu Fundraiser
Phyllis Klingensmith saw a way to help raise more money for the shelter at the New Lenox Campground Festival. There was only one problem - the fest was a week away, and on the same weekend the T.L.C. Garage Sale was being held. Even though there weren't any extra volunteers to be had, that did not put a damper on Phyllis' enthusiasm. With T.L.C. cookbooks, stone critters and pamphlets in tow, Phyllis set up and manned the table herself that day. Despite climbing temperatures, Phyllis told us she had a great time that day, and was pleased at being able to raise $261.48 for the shelter. She enjoyed meeting and speaking to so many animal lovers, and was pleasantly surprised to find out many of the folks had adopted their pet from T.L.C.!
Thanks again, Phyllis!

Licking Her Wounds
She did not realize how dangerous going out that front door could be. Some sick person decided the poor cat was fair game for target practice. Although there were some suspicions, there wasn't any proof as to who might have done something so awful. If there were, we gladly woud have prosecuted. Fortunately after having her treated to remove the beebees, we were able to get her back to her family, who had been searching for her frantically.
It still amazes us how cruel people can be. But again it is just a poor animal this happened to, so it will not make front page news, that is unless this sicko decides to expand his target practice to include people... and sad to say, it does happen.

The Cat's Meow
Ginger Stanek put her talents to use, painting the large window in the shelter's "getting to know you" room, with adorable cat faces. We were enthralled watching Ginger paint, and seeing each new face "come to life". Ginger said it was not a difficult task when it is a subject that you love.
Thank you again, Ginger, the window is beautiful!

Halloween Not a Safe Night for Cats and Dogs!
A night full of ghouls and goblins can turn into a night of disaster for your pet. With the doorbell constantly ringing and kids hollering "Trick or Treat", your pets may get quite agitated. Your dog may become overprotective as a masked goblin comes to your door, and might bite thinking he is protecting his family. In the same token, kitty might become fearful and bolt out the door. Best to have your pet in a safe place out of harms way.
Watch the bowl full of candy too, it should be kept out of Bowser's and Kitty's reach, or you might end up with a pretty sick animal on your hands. Although we may be chocoholics, chocolate is not good for our pets, and could be deadly if a pet eats a large quantity of it.
On the darker side of Halloween, watch out for your pet. Do not leave it unattended to roam the neighborhood. Unfortunately, there are people out there that take pets and use them in satanic rituals. Keep your pet out of harms way, safe and sound in a quiet room in the house, while the little ghouls and goblins are out enjoying the night!

Thinking about sending a nice plant or centerpiece to someone across town or someone across country for the holidays? If you place your order through Floral Alliance, not only will your gift delight the recipient, it will also be helping the animals at T.L.C.! Just call 1-800-423-5803 to place your order, and remember to give the shelter's code number NP-1136 so the shelter recieves credit.
