NOV/DECEMBER:
Pete arrived in Greensboro, Vermont on November 26th. He's laying low at the leader's house until Junior Troop 530 meets on Wednesday, because it's still rifle season up there, and he's a little worried. He shared Thanksgiving dinner with Semmy, another mascot, visiting from Savannah, Georgia.
Pete had his first experience on skis, using only the best in high-tech rubber band bindings. The leader said he was a natural!
He met the girls in the Junior troop, and helped them make cookies and put them in stockings going to a women's shelter. He's also been busy decorating stockings and putting little stocking stuffers in them. I heard he also found time to charm the leaders at a council training.

JANUARY:
Pete arrived safely at Kim's house in North Carolina, and went to the troop meeting on the 5th. He took a cookie quiz with the girls and is anxious to start selling cookies with them.
FEBRUARY:
This month, Pete is visiting a Cadette troop in Connecticut. One of the highlights of his trip was the troop's "Baby Sprinkle". This was a shower the girls had with parents & friends to get donations for a baby girl. The whole thing was just like the real thing with a wishing well, gifts, games & favors. The gifts were given to the first baby girl born at the local hospital on March 12th-the birthday of Girl Scouts.
He also attended "Passport Around the World" for Thinking Day. The troop planned a craft, dance etc. for seven different countries and then stamped the younger girls' passports as they visited the countries.
He also went on a tour of Howard Johnsons & had fun trailblazing at Camp Katoya. Along the way he made friends with a smaller deer named Pebbles who is now traveling with him.
MARCH
Brownie Troop 2407 in Texas was host to Pete for this month. He didn't get to spend very long with the troop unfortunately, but he had a great time on their camping trip.
APRIL
Pete spent April with Junior Troop 2212 in Cleburne Texas. While their troop was hosting Pete, our troop hosted their mascot, Tex the Armadillo.
He went camping with the troop at Stevens Ranch. The pizza made in a box oven was a favorite of his! While there, he got to participate in a bridging and a flag retirement ceremony. He also met another mascot from Hong Kong which was visiting a Daisy troop. In between activities he found time to play in the Canyons, a huge washed out area. The girls came back so dirty he hardly recognized them!
MAY
Pete arrived just in time to go to the mother-daughter event with the Brownies and Juniors in Pardeeville, Wisconsin. He spent the month with 2 other mascots our troop has hosted- Moe the Skunk from Vermont, as well as Jimmy the Jersey Devil-his neighbor mascot from Tuckerton, NJ ! He also marched in the Memorial Day Parade, participated in the court of awards and fly-up ceremony, planted flowers in downtown Portage and visited a community based residential facility with another troop from Portage.
Pete at the Mother-Daughter event called "Clackers, Shackers and Honkers"
JUNE
Pete went to the local Girl Scout Expo with Troop 747 in Bel Air, Maryland. He was surprised at how big it was! On the troop camping trip he made some crafts & learned about kitchen chemistry and bugs and reptiles. The part he really enjoyed was dancing to the music of the DJ!
His favorite thing was going to the Hershey Park GS Camp-O-Ree in mid-June. He met another mascot there-Mrs. Farthing from England as well as Chessie, Troop 747's own mascot. They were disappointed that they couldn't ride the newest roller coaster-Great Bear-but they had a lot of fun on the other rides. Pete brought home SWAPS that looked like little Hershey kisses, and chocolate Twizzlers to share with his home troop.
JULY
Pete took off with a leader and her family from North Carolina and headed to WAGGGS-L camp. This was a special camp held so members of a GS listserv could meet each other. It was at Wellesley Island State Park in New York which is near the 1,000 Islands area. The family drove up from NC and made a special stop at Hershey in PA. He got his picture taken with a life-size York Peppermint Patty and a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup.What fun!
At the camp there were Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from all over the world. There were so many mascots there too, and they had a party just for them. He also got to see Boldt Castle and to travel to Canada.
Before he knew it, he was on a plane to Atlanta, GA and on the way to the Kansas Jamboree. That was a lot of fun! He got to see Indian dances, go to a rodeo, and he toured a one room schoolhouse, doll museum and the Russell Stover candy factory.
AUGUST/SEPTEMBER
Palatine, Illinois was Pete's next stop. He got to attend summer camp with the girls and stayed to attend a leader's training. It was all about mascots and he joined Baa-Baa the sheep from New Zealand, Squiggles the squirrel from Liverpool, England and see Semmie from Savannah, Georgia again.
He also went to two different Junior meetings-one troop only has 10 girls, but the other one has 22! He helped them work on the Pet Care badge which was easy for him since he was a pet already. The girls also planned the calendar for the year, and Pete gave them some ideas he picked up from other troops along the way.
OCTOBER/NOVEMBER
Pete arrived in Gaithersburg, Maryland in time for a leader training called "Outdoor Odyssey". He went to three different classes, Cooking Beyond Cookout, Camping Beyond Campout and Nature Identification, and got lots of good ideas.
A few days later he went to the troop meeting and got to meet all the Brownies from Troop 1879. They were getting ready for a camping trip and were talking about all the necessary equipment they needed and they played a relay game with appropriate clothes. On the 24th they woke up early and got ready to leave. They met 2 sister Brownie troops from Virginia. After setting up camp they got to know each other by earning the Try-It "Working It Out". Then they went on an unnatural hike where they had to find 20 things that the leaders had hid that didn't belong in the woods. Pete ate a foil dinner and also learned what a jungle breakfast was.
Pete was fortunate that he got to stay with the troop long enough to celebrate Juliette Gordon Low's birthday. Not only were there presents, but also a yummy birthday cake-his favorite.
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER
Pete spent the holidays with Junior Troop 1106 in Henderson, North Carolina. Not only did he get to eat a delicious Thanksgiving dinner with the family, but he spent the Christmas holidays with them too. He also went skating with the troop and had a great time.
JANUARY/FEBRUARY
Troop 711 in Grand Blanc, Michigan was host to Pete for two months. At their meeting he played Girl Scout trivia with them, and was surprised at how much they knew. They are learning about Australia for Thinking Day. They made up little newspapers with all the information they could find and learned an Australian song. The Court of Awards was combined with TD and Pete was a little shy about meeting all the parents. But once he saw the Pavlova come out, he was right in there eating away! Before Pete left, he helped the leader sort out all the GS cookies. As a reward he got to eat a Thin Mint-his favorite!
MARCH/APRIL
Again Pete got to visit with two troops-Daisy Troop 570 and Junior Troop 1005 in Arvada, Colorado. He got there just as the cookie sale was wrapping up. The Junior troop sold an incredible 9165 boxes of cookies!!! Pete missed all the hard work, but he got to join in the fun! He got to go with the Junior girls on their "Celebration Tour" of Colorado Springs.
They all piled into 4 vans and headed south. First stop was the US Air Force Academy. They met 2 cadets-one was even a girl- who answered all of their questions. The wonderful day ended with Pete amazed by over 1,000 cadets marching in formation right in front of him.
The next morning they all dressed in their "Sunday best" to go to the Broadmoor Hotel for their famous brunch. There was so much food and all of it so elegant! Afterwards they visited the US Olympic Training Center. They even got to hold the real torches from the Atlanta and Los Angeles games, and see Kristi Yamaguchi's gold medal.
Later on they went to the grocery store to shop for ingredients needed for dinner. Each room of 4 girls took one course, planned their menu, shopped for their supplies, and prepared and hosted one stop on the progressive dinner. When everything was ready, the leader said that they were going to do something she had always wanted to do-eat dessert first! So at their first stop they had brownie sundaes complete with whipped cream and Thin Mint cookies. After that it was spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread, then on to the salad, then the cheese and crackers, and finishing up with a bedtime snack of popcorn, gummi bears and M&Ms. Boy was everyone stuffed!
On the way back home they toured the Cave of the Winds. Later they stopped at a soda fountain that had a 3 story slide. What a blast! The trip was not only a lot of fun, but taught the girls what hard work and teamwork could accomplish.
Unfortunately, Pete was there when the terrible tragedy happened at Columbine High School. They live only about 20 miles away and regularly visit there for games and events. He helped the girls make blue and silver ribbons as a reminder, and the troop talked about the need to be more tolerant and understanding of each other so this doesn't happen again.
MAY
Junior Troop 242 in Saugus, California hosted Pete this month. He arrived in time for a sing along and joined in on singing some of his favorites-Tony Chestnut, the Beaver and Princess Pat.
JUNE/JULY
Pete traveled to Tupelo. Mississippi to visit with Brownie Troop 72. When he first arrived he got to follow the leader around the council office where she just got a full time job. Then he went to Camp Tik-A-Witha to visit her youngest daughter. Boy was it hot, he doesn't know how they handle it without air conditioning!
Pete was surprised by an unexpected trip. He piled into the van with 7 other Brownies and later found out they were going to Savannah, Georgia. The leader makes this trip every year with the girls who are flying up to Juniors. It's about a 9 or 10 hour trip. The girls had their bridging ceremony on the patio behind the Andrew Low home. The carriage shop in the back is where Juliette held the first GS meetings. Now it is the council shop called Daisy's Garden. They also visited the Juliette Gordon Low birthplace and Pete is proud to now be wearing the birthplace pin.
The next day they visited Tybee Lighthouse and the beach where they saw dolphins in the water. Then they toured Seabrook Village which was an African American community formed after the emancipation of the slaves.
They got back in time to say good-bye to the leader's older daughter who was leaving for a wider op trip to Washington DC and New York. Were they surprised to turn on the TV a few days later and see her and the other Cadettes and Seniors on the Today show!
See what our other mascot Pete Jr is up to!
