71. Daniel Y.⁷ HASKETT (Anthony⁶, John⁵, William⁴, Anthony³, Anthony², Thomas¹ HESKETH) was born in NC 16 JAN 1814.⁽⁹⁸⁰⁾ Daniel died 15 JAN 1901 at 86 years of age.⁽⁹⁸¹⁾

He married three times. He married Elizabeth GODFREY in Perquimans Co., NC, 5 OCT 1837.⁽⁹⁸²⁾ Elizabeth was born in NC ABT 1816. Elizabeth died 1853 at 37 years of age.⁽⁹⁸³⁾ He married Hannah J. LOWER.⁽⁹⁸⁴⁾ He married Hannah DAY 22 JUN 1866.⁽⁹⁸⁵⁾ Hannah died 1892 at 78 years of age.⁽⁹⁸⁶⁾

HASKETT bought his first farm (in Indiana) of eighty acres in Tipton County, Ind., the land being situated in the dense woods. He paid $100 for his purchase. and was known as one of the pioneer settlers of Tipton County. Ind. He was also one of the first Free Soilers locating in the county. He voted for the first Presidential candidate upon a Free Soil ticket, James S. Burney.

Mr. Daniel Y. HASKETT lived on a line of underground railroads, and was always ready to help the fugitive black slave fleeing from bondage to the land of liberty, the nights were never too dark, or his fund of money too low to assist the unfortunates on their way to freedom. After buying and selling a number at farms in Tipton and Hamilton Counties, Ind. Mr. Daniel Y. HASKETT finally, in 1855, purchased a small farm of sixty-eight acres in Hamilton. County, Ind.. and resided three years on his new homestead. At the expiration of this length of time, he again sold out and moved to Deming. Ind., and there built a grist and saw mill. He also bought one hundred and twenty acres in Washington Township and later sold this last farm and bought town property in Deming, Ind. Daniel Y. HASKETT ran his mill during the war and then sold out, losing $2,800 on the mill property.

Mr. HASKETT next invested in a drug store, which he ran successfully for three years, then traded the same for one hundred and sixty-six acres of land in Lyons County, Kansas. In 1866 he, with his third wife, located on a small farm south of Deming Ind.. this property belonging to Mrs. HASKETT. Daniel Y. HASKETT and his third wife remained there twenty-two years and received a handsome income from the productive place. Finally they settled in Westfield, Ind., and bought the property upon which Mr. Daniel HASKETT now resides. At one time of his life, worth a large amount of property, he has yet an abundant competence, and now seventy-eight years old, will never want for comforts....

A valued member of the Friends’ Church, Mr. Daniel Y. HASKETT... He is politically a Republican, and cast his first vote for William H. HARRISON, and his last one for Benjamin HARRISON. Daniel Y. HASKETT was represented in the Federal Army during the Civil War by two sons, who bore themselves gallantly upon the field of battle. Albert HASKETT, the eldest son...was County Treasurer at Hamilton County, Ind. from 1889 to 1891, and transacted the Duties of his responsible office in a manner which gave great satisfaction to the general public. Throughout his long career of usefulness, Mr. Daniel Y. HASKETT has, as a friend, neighbor, and citizen, been distinguished by the faithful observance of duty, fully commands the esteem of a wide circle of old-time friends and acquaintances. With thirteen children as direct descendants, thirty living grandchildren and eight great-grandhildren, Daniel Y. HASKETT may hope to be worthily represented in Indiana for many future generations. Mr. HASKETT’S daughter, Mrs. Eva Perry, is his present housekeeper.
