Vacation Bible School
JUNE 28 - JULY 2, HIKING MT. EXTREME
Well, folks, the summer is almost here. I heard someone say, "Just FIVE more weeks of school." What does that mean?
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL!
The material is ordered, the teachers are preparing, things are getting organized. What can you do?
The first and most important thing our church body can do is to pray that VBS will be a successful week and that all our hard work will be for His glory.
Second, we still need a couple more ladies to help with snack time. Contact me or Barbara Blalock (347-5203).
Third, we still need a few baby rockers (contact me). And last, if you can't do the second and third (I know everyone can do the first), there will be envelopes in the pew marked VBS for any monetary contribution you would like to make. As the Bible says in Luke 12:34, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
For those who have signed up to teach, work in the craft room, lead recreation, there will be a Planning Committee Meeting on Thursday, May 27, at 7:00 p.m. I have schedules, and bring your list if you need help with collecting anything. If you have any questions, give me a call (349-4225) or E-Mail me at Icemle@citizen.infi.net. (Ask anyone--I love my E-Mail!)
In Christ, Melessa Enterline, VBS Director

150th Anniversary News
Thanks to all who helped with the Spiritual Growth Weekend. Natalie Beals and Mark Vandiviere presented the beautiful banner made by Kim Raines; Jean Payne wrote and directed a wonderful reenactment of one instance of church discipline from our business meeting minutes. The actors and participants - Bill Beals, Ashley Enterline, Melessa Enterline, Garrett LaClair, Hannah LaClair, William T. Miller, Jean Payne, Larry Weeks and Lynn Zagrod - all did a great job. The music was inspiring, and Dr. Barr's messages were thought provoking and challenging. Juliett Wampler, Helen Dellinger and Barb Caperton prepared a display of some of the discipleship materials used by various groups; Dave Nash was busy videotaping; Myrtle Jenkins and the prayer team supported the effort and the planers; Pastors Sam, Paul and Doug and Dr. Greg Barr provided just what was needed. All who have spiritual ears, let them hear, and be do-ers as well as hearers! Thanks also to the Hospitality Comittee for the fellowship.

Music Notes by Paul Dakin, Minister of Music
I first met Michael Hawn while I was a student at Southern Seminary. He is a gifted teacher and a talented musician who is particularly interested in worship music from Third World cultures. During the last year, a number of these kinds of songs have been introduced into our worship services. Michael tells this story that is both amusing and thought-provoking at the same time.
Michael spent six months of a sabbatical in Nigeria and Kenya, studying the worship music of those countries. One of the things he did was to study West African "Talking Drum" with a seminary student in Nigeria. At the daily chapel services, there were always four or five drummers playing instruments of various sizes along with other percussion instruments.
One day, Michael and his drum instructor were discussing music making in worship, and the Nigerian asked him to describe what the choir does in a typical worship service in the United States. He answered, "In my church, the choir arrives about one- half hour before the service. We warm up our voices, sing through the morning anthem and hymns, put on our robes, pray, and find our places in the choir loft. We sing along on the hymns and then stand to sing the anthem when it is our turn. Then we are seated."
Michael's teacher grew quiet, but finally he had to say exactly what was on his mind. "Is that all there is?" he asked. "If you are not going to play drums and dance, then why do you even bother to sing?" Michael concludes his story by saying, "This is a question that has haunted me and delighted me ever since."
The Fourth Annual Warrenton Baptist Children's Music Camp will be held July 26-30 with the concluding performance during the 11:00 a.m. worship service on August 1. The camp is open to any child who has completed grade 1 through grade 5. More information and registration forms will be available shortly.
Thanks to all of those who participated in the Warrenton Spring Festival outreach last Saturday. One member commented to me that our involvement in the festival just keeps getting better and better, and I think she is right. Special thanks to the Sanctuary Choir (I do not know if you have sounded any better!), the Handbell Choir, the Living Proof Band (formerly known as JEDP Band), and Out of Place.
Also special thanks goes to Pastor Doug and those who did face painting, and to June Jacobs and WMU for doing the helium balloons and arranging for the information table to be staffed. It was a great way to be witnesses for our Lord and to put our church's name before the community. I believe we will be reaping the benefits of this event for months to come.

Sunday School Scoop
Thanks again to all who helped make our Mother's Day program a great success. The children were fabulous and the teachers always do a great job. Thanks to Bill Carter for getting the carnations for us. They were lovely and enjoyed by all our mothers in the church.
We have had a very productive year again as usual. We have great and dedicated teachers. Many thanks also to Mrs. Tudor who has played the piano for our opening every Sunday.
Next year promises to be a good one again, as even though I will be returning to a Sunday School class for the first time in a long while, Donna and Chuck Wilkers will be joining the department as Children's Sunday School Directors. I know they will do a great job, and all the teachers and I will support them next year. Thank you, Donna and Chuck, for saying YES!
All our teachers have done a fantastic job. Many thanks to them all. We do have two rooms needing teachers next year. They are 2nd grade, as Dave Shepherd is not returning, and 4th grade, as Ken and Debbie Boyles will be taking a break. Thank you all for being so dedicated and doing such a great job with our children. After you break for a while, we do hope you will return.
Our last big event for this year was the roller skating at Hugo's on May 16 from 1:30 - 5:00 p.m. We met in the Fellowship Hall right after church Sunday. The children brought a bag lunch and chips. Drinks were provided, and refreshments were served at Hugo's, compliments of The Children's Committee. Many thanks to them for all their support this year at parties and special.
I am somewhat sad about leaving but look forward to returning to a Sunday School Class. It's been wonderful working in the Children's Department not only as a teacher but also as your director. Thank you for that opportunity, and I shall truly miss the children in that department. I will be around if anyone needs me.
My love to you all, Cheryl Carter, Sunday School Director

I've had a number of people asking me how they can help with the upcoming World Changers project in Fauquier County. I'm glad you asked! There are a number of jobs posted on the bulletin board just outside the sanctuary at the piano-side entrance. Choose the one that is suited to you and sign your name.
Here is a list of the jobs I need people to help fill. If you have a skill, talent or desire to do a job not listed here, please let me know - we can use your help.

Christian Youth Day at Six Flags is Saturday, June 5. Formerly Adventure World, Six Flags America in Largo, MD features over 100 thrill rides and a world-class water park. For one price of $16.50, we can enjoy the amenities of the park, as well as a concert featuring the ska band, Insyderz and more. Sign up on the youth bulletin board as soon as possible since I need to order tickets this week. If there are families who would like to take advantage of this great deal, let me know and plan to join us.

The next car wash is May 29 at the Warrenton Exxon. Remember that every hour you work counts toward the price of your mission trip. Sign up on the bulletin board for the time you expect to be there. Also keep in mind that the final car wash is June 12. I'd like to encourage all of our members to bring your car by for a bath and support our young people.
Graduation Sunday
Graduation Sunday is June 13. We want to honor our high school graduates for their accomplishment on that day. First of all, we'll provide breakfast during Sunday School and then a special time of recognition during the 11:00 a.m. worship service. If you would like to take part in this special day, please let me know.
I also want to honor those who have received other degrees this year. If you have earned a degree in the past year, or know of someone who has, please let me know.
Summer Interns
I've asked Carrie & Stacey Moffett to help with the youth program this summer as interns. They have a great deal to offer and are excited by what they can contribute, especially in the way of small groups.
These young ladies grew up in Warrenton Baptist and it's wonderful to see their desire to pursue God's calling in their lives. They are both currently attending Elon College and studying toward degrees in education.

"The Future Begins Now"
Warrenton Baptist Church is about to begin a new chapter in its history. As the church strives to grow spiritually and physically, there are many exciting challenges ahead.
On June 20, 1999, our church will dedicate the property that has been purchased in the block behind the existing building. There will be an exciting program starting in conjunction with the dedication. "The Future Begins Now" is a program designed to quickly reduce the outstanding debt of approximately $390,000 in debt over the next year. This will save the church many dollars that would be paid in interest over the course of the loan.
"The Future Begins Now" will involve YOU! Every church member, young and old, will be participating in this program. Complete details will be coming very soon. Warrenton Baptist Church has been celebrating its heritage of the past 150 years. This is a chance for us to begin the next 150 years. Let's build on our heritage together!

Financial Notes
Reminder - Please note that if your offering envelope is not marked WM1, WM2, or WM3, the tellers will automatically credit your gift to WM1. This includes children's envelopes. If you don't use an envelope and your check is not designated WM1, WM2 or WM3, it will be credited to WM1.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? Just briefly, WM1 gifts go to Southern Baptist Convention traditional causes. WM2 gifts also go to Southern Baptist traditional causes and other, non-traditional Southern Baptist causes. WM3 gifts go to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship for distribution. For a more complete breakdown, see the bulletin board outside the Financial Office.
There are two growth funds - Capital Growth and Property Purchase. If you mark your envelope for Heritage, Building, Growth or Capital Improvements, your gift is credited to the Capital Growth Fund. If you mark your envelope for Property Purchase, Land Purchase or Debt Retirement, your gift is credited to the Property Purchase Fund.
Need more information? Feel free to call or drop by the Financial Office, Monday-Thursday, 9:00-3:00.
And one more thing! If you need to be reimbursed for any church expenditure, I will be happy to write a check for you. Please fill out a gray disbursement voucher and attach a receipt (or a copy of a receipt) or a copy of your check for that expense.
Janet White, Financial Secretary

Dear Members and Friends of WBC,
My deepest thanks for the cordial welcome you have given me as a new staff member. Everyone I have met in person or spoken with on the phone has been kind, helpful and understanding. I hope that in time I will be able to personally get better acquainted with all of you. Please let me know how I can be of service in your needs.
Gratefully, Joanne Strasser, Church Secretary
Thanks to Jim Raines, Eric Wusthof, Maury George, and Russ Barlowe for moving the piano from the Fellowship Hall to the home of Barbara Vaseleck.

Tiny Tot News
The National Day of Prayer, May 6, was a very special day at Tiny Tots. The children gathered hand in hand with their classmates and teachers in the front courtyard in prayer circles while the church bell rang for 15 minutes. Many children gave prayers thanking the Lord for their families and friends. One child prayed for peace. Many thanks to staff members: Ricki Russell, Sandy Pittelkau, Carrell Olinger, Kay Herrman, Linda Weber, Monica Jones and Cheryl for ringing the church bell.
The Tiny Tot booth at the Old Town Festival featured a child's bag lunch and a lollipop tree. Thanks to all who stopped by. Special thanks go to Sandy Pittelkau, Karl Pittelkau, Janie Todd, Amy Todd, Leslie Mullen, Parent Volunteer, Caren Eastham, and Cheryl for manning the booth and cleanup duty. Lunches not sold were distributed to the Sheriff's Department, Deputies on duty at the Jail, Rescue Squad, Fire Department, Sunrise Retirement Home and to families in need staying at the Jefferson and Johnson Motels.
The Spring Program will be held on Friday, June 4, at 10:00 a.m. The theme for this year's program is "Noah's Ark". "Noah" and his family are just loading the last supplies into the ark. The "animals" are anxious to load and the "raindrops" are ready to begin. Join us for a great morning of music and song.
The 15th Tiny Tot Graduation Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, June 15, at 6:30 p.m. Thirty-six students will be graduating and going to "big school" in the fall. We are happy to welcome Mrs. Elizabeth Putnam, Principal of M. M. Pierce Elementary as our guest speaker. A reception in the fellowship hall will follow the ceremonies. June 16 will be the last day of our Tiny Tot school year. It has gone so fast. The children have grown so much. June 17 and 18 will be teacher workdays. The first day of the summer program will be Monday, June 21. The center will be closed the week of June 28 - July 2 for Vacation Bible School.
Blessings to All, Cheryl and Staff

HE LEADETH ME . . .
In "green pastures"? Not always; sometimes He
Who knowest best, in kindness leadeth me
In weary ways, where heavy shadows be.
Out of the sunshine, warm and soft and bright,
Out of the sunshine into darkest night,
I oft would faint with sorrows and affright,
Only for this: I know He holds my hand;
So whether led in green or desert land,
I trust, although I may not understand.
Beside "still waters"? No, not always so;
Ofttimes the heavy tempest ‘round me blow,
And o'er my soul the waves and billows go.
But when the storms beat loudest, and I cry
Aloud for help, the Master standeth by,
And whispers to my soul, "Lo, it is I."
Above the tempest wild I hear Him say:
"Beyond this darkness lies the perfect day;
In every path of time I lead the way."
So whether on the hill-tops high and fair
I dwell, or in the sunless valleys where
The shadows lie, what matter? He is there.
And more than this; where'er the pathway lead,
He gives to me no helpless, broken reed,
But His own hand, sufficient for my need.
Henry H. Barry
